On J.D. Martinez and the Triple Crown

From the latest Joe Sheehan Baseball Newsletter:

“When Miguel Cabrera won the Triple Crown in 2012, his achievement was so tied up in the argument over the AL MVP that it got a bit lost. I know this is anathema to some of my peers, but we can respect the Triple Crown — an achievement that has resonated down through the years — without turning in our nerd cards.

“Cabrera shouldn’t have been AL MVP six years ago and J.D. Martinez shouldn’t be AL MVP now; that’s a separate conversation from whether a Triple Crown is something we should celebrate. We should, and I’ll be rooting for Martinez to pull it off.”
