The Mets have six remaining games against the Phillies, who are battling for a playoff spot, three games behind the Braves in the NL East and 4.5 games out of the second wild card. Anyone else looking forward to peeing in their punch bowl?

Pee in the punch bowl? I want to s*** in the shish kabob!
Winning each of those series will solidify the winning culture that will make the 2019 team a playoff team.
The 2019 team needs to add a set up man and a closer and it’s going to cost$$$$.
Lugo and Gsellman need to stay in their role of multiple inning relievers. That is what they do the best.
Remember, it’s the pitching, it’s the pitching, it’s the pitching stupid!

Remember relief pitchers are very unpredictable. Today’s closer is next year’s Bozo. Next years closer is a failed starter this year. You never know and it’s dangerous to,put all your money on them.

A few years ago, fangraphs had an article just about what you’re saying. You’re right but we still need to set up man and we still need a closer so if you don’t have it you got to buy it and it’s going to be expensive.

in 2016 the phils played the same game

I still want to beat the Phillies because of the Steve Carlton-Mike Schmidt-Greg Luzinski years. I don’t care what their record is.

But it will be especially nice if the Mets beat up on Nola to help out JDG in his Cy Young chase.

Brian…I was in College during the laste 70’s, early 80’s— outside of Philly.

That first Philly Championship was Unbearable!!!!! The NY Giants provide my Revenge!!!!

Next Year…. here’s where I see some opportunity for Better quality and depth, based on exisiting guys

1b: Jay Plays on Many Days. Todd can cover some RH Bats. Eventually, Alonzo is the RH 1bman…if not the full timer.

ss: Rosario… “2 of the 3” McN, Cheech, TJ as a MIF backup

3b: Todd….. 2 of the 3 McNeill, Cheech, TJ with be on the roster…covering 3b on days that Todd is at 1st

2b: “same 2 of 3” as above…. this group may include a signed FA or trade piece

C- 2 of the 2018 3 will be back….certainly Plawecki (i’ll remind you that i continue to believe in KP, now with some evidence)

OF: Nimmo, Conforto, Lagares,…. Jay on Days when he’s not at 1b….and that may be often if Alonzo takes the Job.

OF: need a ligit 4th guy who is a RH Hitter…. Maybe TJ provides this as a super sub. It’s high value and high need. Lagares is #5…purely a defensive sub. He doesn’t get a “chance” beyond whatever he makes for himself.

Overall Positional: Team needs a RH bat…Alonzo is a big hope in that area. I believe Wilmer should be gone. There is not reason to pay him unless he’s a starter because he simply clogs to many other opportunities. If you’ve ever coached and cut players, this is not a joyful thought.

I hunch that the team should seek either an IF RH Bat for 2b use/rotation, or a RH OF Bat—a Real Player. Overlap and “too much depth” should not be considerations. Sign the right guys—let the players decide who plays.

Pitching: Mostly bullpen needs. They have a nice starting point overall. JF should be considered for a return engagement.

Eraff – my thoughts exactly. Get the best right handed bat we can get and worry about the musical chairs after.

    • Mike Walczak

Holy Crap, you have put together the 2017 Mets. All you are missing is Alderson doing the magic!

      • Eraff

Yes Mike—with the exception of changes at 3b, 2b, 1b, Nimmo, Alonzo, RH OF Bat…and Healthy Pitchers—- Bullpen, Bench Pieces—Yes…It’s otherwise Exactly The Same Team as 2017!!!!!!

        C’mon Man!!!! 🙂

      • Mike Walczak

Sorry I meant the 18 Mets. Let’s get some firepower. Forget Realmuto. Machado and Grandal is my new song.

    • Metsense

Erath that was a well thought-out comment. I think when Alonso gets the opportunity through injury or tearing up Syracuse he will be promoted and never go down. He is the right-handed bat they desperately need.
But remember, in July Cespedes will be still batting right-handed.

      • Eraff

I would not plan on Ces… all the better if he comes back

  • b

    amen.

A big righty bat and some pen help……

have I heard this song before???????

Got me singing the sub .500 blues…

    • Metsense

Chris , In 2016 we argued similarly. Don’t you remember how that turned out ? You just don’t listen or you just had brain surgery! Anyways I still love you friend sorry I’m missed the Cincinnati trip. I regret it to this day. Hopefully I’ll see you in Charlotte next year. Peace

      • Chris F

The Cincy trip…let me tell you, I remember the chat on Friday night when it wasnt clear if the Mets could clinch the next day. Right after the win Friday, I got my tix on stub hub for Saturday. It was so friggin awesome being there. Bottom 1, Duda launches a laser to RF for a granny, and I knew we were gonna clinch. Harvey was awesome enough (got some great pix of him). DWright’s 3 run HR was incredible. And the celebration at the end. Reds fans vacated seats so we could all be by the Met dugout. About 30 min later the team came out, TC sprayed us with champagne. Before the Mets came out, we were all yelling for Gary and Keith, who opened their window and waved to us: Ga-ry-Co-hen clap-clap clap-clap-clap Keith-Her-nan-dez clap-clap clap-clap-clap!!

On the drive home, I listened to the replay. You’d of absoutely loved it Metsense. I got Confortos hat and a played ball from the game.

Awesome! Every Mets fan’s dream. Very happy for you Chris and I still have the pictures.

        • TJ

          Chris,
I wasn’t there but I watched on TV and I’ll always remember Terry Collins fondly for going out (against MLB rules I here), acknowledging, and celebrating with the fans.

Hey Brian. I’m not getting a confirmation notice to my email for blogs I’m posting

    • MattyMets

Pete if you use gmail it’s inconsistent with which folder it gets sorted to. Check social or updates.

  • b

how about 4 torre rings ?

  • b

leave Sandy alone : Wheeler and Thor remember them ???

I’m just glad the Nationals went down. All that talent and money. I knew, when they hired Tommy Milone they were in trouble.
The Phillies I can stomach but it would be nice to capsize their boat.

  • Chris F

Funny, I couldnt care less. Im more worried about the Mets than the Phillies. Id way rather get a better draft pick and use talent to beat them rather than taking pleasure in peeing in their punch bowl, still being out of it, and drafting lower.

  • Madman

Reyes is back! He’s always hit in Philly. Maybe his last career homer tonight.

  • José

OK, in 1999, J Olerud, who is 6’5″ and stood straight up in the batter’s box, drew 125 BBs batting ahead of M Piazza, who jacked 40 bombs with a .303 BA.

    My question: How?

    • Brian Joura

      Three answers:

      1. Olerud knew the strike zone exceptionally well.
      2. It was a time period when the high strike was very rarely called.
      3. The guy hitting behind you is not nearly as important in the pitches a batter sees as conventional narrative wants you to believe.

      • Mr_Math

Thanks Bri. I had no idea you responded, since I always expect to be mostly ignored on the internets. What can I say, my immense charm doesn’t translate well. So, despite it being nearly 3 years…

Now I realize that our modern statistical interpretation of baseball indicates that your point 3 above is correct, but it seems counterintuitive, just as the notion that having some jackrabbit dancing around 1st base doesn’t serve to distract the pitcher as much as we’d apriori think it would.

When I was much younger and vastly skinnier (say, around age 14), I was always very careful not to walk the batter when the team’s sasquatch was on deck taking practice swings with an oak tree.

Still trying to somehow reconcile these points.

Not overly kidding about ‘squatch. This dude had at least 3 inches and 75 pounds on me, back when I was 5’ 10″ and 140, while he (allegedly) was the same age I was
