On a day where the rain came in buckets, the Mets were able to snag their second consecutive series after they defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 6-4.

While the small, drenched crowd that was filling the seats today at Citi Field may have expected Jacob deGrom while they were making their trek to the game today, they instead received Corey Oswalt. Oswalt, having been thrown quickly into the game due to the inclement weather, was able to muster 3 innings of work for the Mets. In those three innings, he struck out four while allowing five hits and two earned runs. With only 59 pitches thrown after three, it came as a bit of a surprise that Oswalt was yanked after only three. After he was removed though, a whole gaggle of bullpen pitchers came into the game.

Drew Gangon, Eric Hanhold, Drew Smith, and Seth Lugo all took the mound after Oswalt left, and for the most part, all of them were effective. It was interesting to see the Mets, who have had a rather inconsistent season at the bullpen, come away with a win in a game that was based around the bullpens of each of the teams.

On offense, the Mets again showed that they have multiple ways of bringing runs across the plate. A big proponent of the offense today was Michael Conforto, who in the first inning, hustled out an infield single to knock in his first RBI of the game. Later in the fifth, Conforto drilled a three run homerun to left field, showcasing his versatility. My Gut Reaction is that this game might have been a preview of the offense of the future for the Mets. Today it seemed that Amed Rosario, who was driven in three times today, seemed to set the table for hitters like Jeff McNeil and Conforto to drive him in.

Following the win, the Mets will host the Miami Marlins at Citi Field in a four game series that starts tomorrow night at 7:10 pm.

DeGrom gets yanked and they score 6 runs. Go figure!

Mets are a different team with McNeil and he should have been up weeks earlier when Frazier went down in early July for a month. And Reyes started at third 12 out of 14 games at third base during that time, which was insanity. Conforto is getting very hot with five homers in the last twelve games and you love to see him hit the ball to the opposite field with power. Nimmo continues to get on base and it’s fun seeing him running the bases. Rosario has been real good the last month and even drew a walk vs a very tough righty in Neshek. It is very encouraging to see the kids continue to kill it and help the team spoil teams seasons and give us some hope.

Nice job by Smith cleaning up Hanhold’s mess and could be better than Gsellman and you’d like to see him strike more guys out and Lugo was as dominant as we’ve ever seen him being striking out five of six.

All in all, good to see the Mets help do a lot of damage against a fading Phillies team.

Great win. Lookout now, but only 12 games under .500 with 24 games to go. It will ruin the drafting position, but this team needs to see a light going into next year, even if it’s just candlelight.

Well Matt, the Mets s*** in the Phillies shish kabob! Another nice game and Dave’s comment put it in perspective. My gut reaction is similar to Dalton’s. We are seeing a new Mets offense highlighting on-base percentage and base running speed. Alonzo and Giminez are waiting in the wings . The Mets have young, cheap tallent for the next few years. Remember it is the pitching that has set up this late season run. Can they take three out of four from the Marlins? I have my money on them. LGM
