Rumor has it the Arizona Diamondbacks are about to blow it up. A.J. Pollock and Patrick Corbin are free agents and some big names are expected to be made available in trade, including superstar Paul Goldschmidt (more on that later today) and ace Zack Grienke. Should the Mets be in on any of these guys?

The priority should be Closer, C and then CF. The other bullpen slots can be chosen from within the organization. Non tender TDA and Flores. Realistically I see no one who the Mets will trade for on Arizona. As for Pollock? Depends on the budget as always.

I’d offer AZ Dom Smith and Robert Gsellman for Goldschmidt, but that’s about it. I am not trading the young version of Alonso for an older, more expensive and in the last year of his contract Alonso. Also Goldy’s decline in 2018 is alarming.

This is a statement that will very likely draw hoots and snickers, but Sandy Alderson really didn’t leave the Mets in a bad way. There are no really bad contracts of any length, and Cespedes’ deal is covered by insurance. (They do need to find someone to take Bruce IMO). They have a decent core of talent and a pipeline of some good, but not great prospects in place.

The new GM really needs to focus on the bullpen. They need two late-inning arms. Robertson and Britton would be my primary targets. I would also talk to Houston about either Derek Fisher or Myles Straw to play CF. Stay very far away from AJ Pollock

Dan, I completely agree with you. Two strong bullpen arms and a quality catcher are the priorities. Ideally I’d like a reserve OF who can play defense and would be an upgrade over Austin Jackson and insurance for the inevitable Lagares injury. They still need a big right handed bat, but I don’t see Goldschmidt as the best solution. Maybe Alonso fits the bill or maybe we need a new slugger. As I said last year (but Alderson had other ideas) the FO needs to get creative with trades and not rely solely on free agency.

The priorities are catcher And to Bullpen arms. But Paul Goldschmidt, if the price is right intrade, and is available then they should check into it as I posted in your article about Goldschmidt earlier.

If Goldschmidt only has one year left on his contract, it’s not worth it.

We need to focus on what we need.

Watching Houston get eliminated with their holes in RF, C, DH, to a team with way less pitching than them tells me they will be looking for upgrades. That’s the perfect team for Jay Bruce to go to and if the Mets throw in Gsellman, they should be able to get one of those two OF prospects that Dan referred to.

No on Goldschmidt, even though he really is as five tool as a first baseman can be and would be an upgrade, for one year, the Yankees actually need that not the Mets. Too, he should cost at least two good prospects seeing the not too expensive salary for his production and the QO expectancy after this year.
