Manny Machado is one of the prize free agents available this offseason and there have been a ton of people who have advocated that the Mets sign him. Unfortunately, Machado had a miserable World Series and displayed questionable sportsmanship, too. His final slash line was .182/.208/.182 and in 6 playoff series in his career, he has a .213/.268/.382 line in 99 PA.

Does this give you any pause for concern – either the production or the sportsmanship – or do you think it’s mostly irrelevant?

Machado checks so many “boxes”… how could a team not consider him as a young, high tier cornerstone?

Mets plan going forward needs to include top shelf FA when available. Plan…there’s that word.

30+ million a year for 10seasons, that’s a big nut. This is a guy who says he doesn’t hustle. This is a guy who played in Camden Yards, a hitters park. Does anyone have his splits? He is a very good player, he is in his prime but be careful what you wish for.

You nailed it pretty good on Camden Yards. Machado has 50% more homeruns despite 150 less plate appearances. His OPS in Camden is .888, but .741 on the road. He’s a .296 hitter at Camden and .269 elsewhere.

Also, a 137 RC+ at home but only 104 RC+ on the road. Ironically, only a 114 RC+ playing 3B but a 144 when playing SS. Looks like a very emotional player. Tread lightly.

Im over it. His, “I dont hustle” comment pretty much sealed the deal. When it matters, that beating out an infield grounder, going first to third, digging in for an AB matters, esp in October. Quite frankly, Ces is already too much of a lolly-gagger for me. Adding a pouting, nasty, prima dona not on my list of positive moves.

That last AB was perfect as a time capsule.

      +1

I believe there are better ways to spend the money. But with the Phillies nd maybe Braves in the mix, BVW damn well better drive that price up as high as he can.

I could see a one year pillow $35MM contract in Philly where he acts like a Boy Scout in an effort to get a 10/400 next year, that he won’t get this year.

There’s no need for him to sign a pure 1 yr pillow contract when he can easily tack on a safety net.

The way he would structure it is as a 7-8 year deal with an opt out after year 2 (very unlikely a team would give a 1 year opt out with that many years). That protects him in case he reverts back to 2017 levels while giving him the upside if he rehabilitates his public image.

If he does really want a 1 year opt out, Cespedes would be the model to follow, so it would be a 3 year deal.

I don’t believe anything he’s done this post-season affects his value much. He’s never been a bad actor…he has made some visible mistakes, and it’s “fun” (apparently) to knock people down from high perches. He’s a Prince with a wart or two, not a Frog.

I was for signing Machado before the postseason, but not anymore. I do think the Wilpons will finally spend with BVW hired. And spending money on Grandal or Ramos (maybe even trading for Realmuto) and some top bullpen arms (Kimbrel, Ottavino, Familia, Robertson, and Sipp are free agents).

I’m thinkinking the new GM signing is a sign that Jeff is in charge. I think this means the Mets will spend like in the Minaya era. Harper and Machado are unlikely. Allen,Familia,Donaldson,McCutcheon,Grandal might be targets.

Wheeler for Andujar and sign Corbin.

    • TJ

      Mike,
      No thank you.

  • Eraff

Mike— so, the yanks can sign Corbin and keep Andujar. Why are they trading an elite young player for a guy with one year of control??? You might make a trade like that at the deadline—why would the Yanks do that now? They may as well just sign Corbin and keep Andujar.

If you want Baby Talk–Go to Macks Mets..they do that there….I’m telling you as a Friend.

Hey…sorry for the outburst. Factually, I’m at 100%, but it’s not the Kinder, Gentler path that I’m now seeking. Sometimes, the A-Hole in Me just aches to announce, “I’m an A-Hole!!!”…. as if it’s not noticed.

    Sorry, Mike!…and all.

    • Mike Walczak

You are forgiven. We just endured another frustrating season.

Reading a good book published in 2018.

“I am Keith Hernandez” The memoirs of Keith Hernandez.

I found it at the library.

You gents may be interested in reading it.

Ok…Jeff pretty much indicated today that they are working on a deGrom deal.

    From MetsBlog:

Several other lower-ranking baseball ops staffers are also weighing their futures. But word from nearly all corners of the Citi Field offices — genuine, off the record, no-spin word — was that Van Wagenen’s news conference and collaborative vibe around the office this week improved morale. Some folks who were considering leaving with Alderson now hope to stay and work with Van Wagenen, and there does not appear to be as much turnover coming as it once seemed.

While no personnel decisions are yet final, Van Wagenen will bolster the Mets’ analytics staff. Per sources, he is considering importing some analytics people from CAA, his former agency. He is also said to be considering which of his contacts around the league would be good fits as assistant GMs.

I’m not interested in Machado or Harper. Unless the Wilsons are suddenly willing to move to maintaining a $200mm payroll, you can’t lock up that much payroll in one player and fill in all the other areas of need. For $35mm you can get a real catcher and 2 good relievers. If the Wilsons are suddenly willing to spend like the Red Sox, Yankees and Dodgers then yeah, let’s go for Machado.
