Of these there are caveats for most.

Overpay for Realmuto – How much is overpaying? Overpay in whose eyes?

Bring Back d’Arnaud and/or Flores – It isn’t necessarily a bad idea to do one or the other if you are willing to also spend money elsewhere.

Sign Bryce Harper – No, I don’t want him.

Sign Manny Machado – Yes, this would make our offense instantly relevant.

Give a multi-year to one of the RPs – We probably have to, the questions is which will prove worth it.

So the only one I could safely say was 100% a bad idea was to resign Reyes. He will eat playing time for better younger players.

Editor’s Note – Capitals David, really?

The Mets are not in a position to overpay for anyone. The only time that really makes sense is if you have a stocked farm system, are in the pennant race and you need one guy to put you over the top so that you can part with a prized prospect/prospects.

While many moves may be bad, and overpaying is worse, the worst would be to actually go after Goldschmidt. Putting on my Dave Stewart hat, “we’ll give you Alonzo, Kelenic and Mauricio for Goldschmidt.”

Yeah, that’s a good point. This should have been one of the choices.

If my name was Fred, writing a $375 million check for Manny would put me in overspend mode. No more significant moves could be made, locking everyone into the “egg in one basket” dullness with some dire consequences for the team for years to come.

The worse move the Mets could make but not on your list is to trade deGrom.

Reyes will retire when no one signs him. Harper is an OF and we have enough of those right now.

Machado’s dogging it would get old in a hurry in Flushing.

I can see the Mets bringing back both d’Arnaud and Flores.

    Overpay for Realmuto? no way.

Multiple years on relievers? sure, if you want to sign them, you would have to. Every other team will offer multiple years.

It feels like signing Machado is a very long shot – maybe 5-10%? If that’s the right ballpark for Machado, I feel like trading deGrom is in the .0001% ballpark.

There are a lot of bad moves the Mets could make. Bringing back Reyes, even at league minimum, would be among them.

Realmuto, Machado and the relievers mentioned would all make the team better…but at what expense?

A definite no on Harper – he would tie up to much cash over the long term. Can that amount of money really be justified.
Do not resign Reyes. Adds no value to the team – none – zilch
Like d’Arnaud if he will stay healthy and I like Mesoraco backing him up. Plawecki has no bat.
Concentrate on the bullpen. Do not like. “longterm” contracts. Relievers wear out so three years at the most.

I read an article about “Pre-Agency:” signing for deGrom…it landed on a 5 year deal at an average of $31 million….. frankly, that’s insane! I hate the captive nature of all the sports salary systems, and I believe Jake should not choose to throw a pitch without a long money agreement in place—given the reality of the present system (much as I hate it), the Mets would be insane to do a 31 million average deal over 5 years.
