With new GM Brodie Van Wagenen on the scene, the rumor mill has been turning greater than we’re used to seeing here the past few years. We’ve heard talk about trading Noah Syndergaard for a bunch of prospects. There have been discussions about taking on Robinson Cano‘s contract in order to get Edwin Diaz. And earlier there were whispers about emptying out the farm system to get J.T. Realmuto. If you were the new GM, which direction would you go?

What type of trade should the Mets make?

It should all be on the table. It’s more about the return than the approach.

    B) Cano. Gives the Mets flexibility to sign a C, infield help and one more arm for the pen without trading the core three SP

Any good GM would tell you that all of those are options that can be done simultaneously. Its an error to think you couldn’t trade Syndergaard for real talent **and** pick up an expensive FA **and** trade Giminez for MLB talent.

Option #5: Trade a bad contract that’s blocking a younger player for a bad contract that doesn’t block a younger player (see Bruce, Jay)

  • TJ

As noted above, the strategies are somewhat interdependent. To put the best team possible on the field for 2019-2021, they’ll likely need a mix.

Dealing Bruce for a need elsewhere makes a lot of sense, unless dealing Nimmo brings back more net value. The same goes for Syndergaard. The first big move is very very crucial in this case, but having a fluid plan B and plan C may be most important should the marketplace change, which almost always happens. It’s all about value. Accepting a bad contract works if it brings in other key pieces and the payroll cost does not then prohibit filling other needs.

The moves I do not get… The entire Cano thing makes no sense, and trading Noah for prospects while signing a FA Starter who will be a) more expensive, and 3) not as good as Noah….see…makes no sense!

    All “Slow News Click Bait”.

Marwyn Makes Sense…why aren’t we talking aboutb that???..probably because it’s closer to a live topic.

Also, Machado is a Perfect Met’s Fit—4 years, 160 with a 5th year option to start….that would open the bidding. Make Todd the “move Guy”…. or push McNeil to be the “Move guy”, with Machado at ss and Rosario at 2b.

  • Pete

Eraff that would put the Mets payroll at 184 million and you’d still need a closer and some relief help in the pen. The figure I gave is from Cot’s and includes the arbitration eligible players. I don’t see the Wilpons pulling the trigger for signing Machado. I’ve been talking about Marwin Gonzalez since the end of the WS in numerous Mets 360 posts. A more realistic signing. So I guess we’ll see what the payroll mystery number will be. I do find one thing interesting about the Cano deal. You get the sense that our new GM already has an idea of how much the payroll is going to be and the limitations he has in order to make this work.

Pete…not sure where you’re getting your $$$’s, although I’m not necessarily counting those yet. Here’s a roundup that Includes Wilmer and d’Arnaud at about 9 million and shows $127 million….and they’re nuts to sign those guys!

Machado might necessitate some other moves…. you start with what works…and I believe the Mets should be at 170-200—or they should trade off everyone for Prospects.

That’s because your website doesn’t include Wright’s salary. Otherwise your at 144 or so.

    • Pete

I’m getting my information from Cot’s Baseball Prospectus. You can Google Cot’s and you’ll see where I’m getting the salaries. I’ll say this again and again, If the Wilpons did not invest any of the 50 million dollars they received from the MLB sale of Bamtech to Disney (50 million for all 30 teams) then what makes you think the payroll will go up? Even knowing that Wright’s contract had insurance did the Wilpons put any of that money back into the team? No they did not. Brodie’s moves appear to answer that question

I wouldn’t trade Syndergaard and would make him an untouchable. For those wanting a vet it looks like Cano along with Diaz is on the way https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/11/significant-momentum-mets-trade-rumors-mariners-acquire-robinson-cano-edwin-diaz.html

    • Steve S.

Just make Thor, Kelenic, and McNeil untouchable.

      • David Klein

Trading Kelenic would be insanity and I’d be convinced that Brodie is Steve Phillips Jr

        • Mike Walczak

I think they will trade McNeill before Kelenic.

  • JImO

The report is that Dunn, McNeill, and Kelenic are all heading west.

    • TJ

If that is accurate I will puke upon the official announcement.

      • MattyMets

If the report of us sending McNeill and two of our best prospects is accurate than I’m not interested unless Seattle pays half of Cano’s contract and also includes another good player. This would otherwise handcuff us to an aging player with a big contract and severely deplete our farm system. I hope there’s a better version of this by morning.

        • Chris F

Its looking like Bruce, Swarzak, McNeil, Dunn, Kelenic. I just hope there is more than Cano and a closer and $.

But Ill say one thing: this has the feel of going for it in some obtuse way of taking on a ton of salary for 2ish years of Cano.

          • Steve S.

McNeil reportedly out of the deal and Bautista in, making the deal more palatable, but I don’t like that Kelenic is included. Will Frazier be dealt now or will McNeil be the supersub?

  • Herb Goldstein

Why isn’t “all of the above” one of the selections. For the right return, any of those makes sense. For example:

    1. Trade Syndergaard to San Diego for Francisco Mejia, Luis Urias, Chris Paddack, and maybe Jose Castillo.
    2. Trade Nimmo, Dom Smith and Ronny Mauricio to Cleveland for Yan Gomes and Carlos Correa.
    3. Trade Bruce, Swarzak, Dunn, McNeil & Mark Vientos to Seattle for Cano, (and cash) Diaz, and Mallex Smith,
    4. Flip Cano (with the cash) to the Yankees for Clint Frazier.

Yan Gomes solves the catcher need.
    Carlos Correa replaces Thor
    Edwin Diaz is our closer
Urias could replace McNeil at 2B this year
Mejia could compete to be Gomes Backup
Chris Paddack is a star in the making, 1 year away
and we have an outfield of LF Conforto, CF Smith/Lagares RF Frazier with Jordan Patterson waiting in the wings until Yoenis returns.

And that does not take into account free agent signings to further fill out and upgrade the roster.

  • Pete

That would include minimum league salaries for the remaining roster spots.

  • JImO

Current rumor has McNeil out and Gerson Bautista in the deal.

How can you trade two number 1 picks in the same deal?

    • Eraff

      I hate the “Reported Deal”

      • TJ

The inclusion of Kelenic makes it an overpay. Seattle likely required him as a piece… still need to see how much money Seattle sends, but at this point I am not excited at all.
