So far in trades and free agency, the Mets have added two relievers, a second baseman and a catcher. Do you think the club has another big move – let’s define that as an AAV salary of at least $5 million – left or do you think it’s shopping in the bargain aisles for the rest of the offseason? And if you think there’s another non-bargain move, do you think it’s for another reliever, an outfielder or some other position?

Was looking over the Mets website and clicked on the coach’s tab just because… As I went down the names, I noticed one was missing: Glenn Sherlock’s name wasn’t there. Wasn’t he supposedly switched to first base coach? Instead, he’s not there at all and Ruben Amaro’s name is back as first base coach, with DiSarcina as third base coach and Jim Riggleman is bench coach. Don’t tell me they won’t have a catcher’s coach again…

    • Brian Joura

I haven’t heard anything about Sherlock not being back.

While it’s possible that the official site jumped the gun with some information that the club doesn’t want public yet, I’d say it’s more likely that the website administrator just messed up the link somehow.

Please don’t sign Adam Jones he can’t play CF anymore and is a mediocre hitter.

I happened to be watching the “Survivor” TV program last week and when the credits came up at the end, a Matt Van Wagenen was listed as executive producer, perhaps he is a relative of our own Brodie?

While I’d like to see a LH Bullpen arm and a RH outfielder (Or Marwyn), it’s entirely possible that the Mets see TJ or Cheech as RH Utility/OF/Bench bats.

I couldn’t make the call as to which is more preferable…I’d lean to a Marwyn Signing and “Growing and Arm”, or finding an arm cheaply.

I expect one more “Major move”, as the OP defined it.

I am very impressed with the off season. Admittedly, it only meets some of my own taste and preference…but it seems to have been done with strong conviction by Mets management…. you can’t argue that they’re leaving themselves in a morose In-Between. Right or wrong, these have been “strong” moves.

The Mets have plenty of money to put towards the 2019 payroll, what with insurance monies and backloaded contracts. I too am impressed to this point, specifically with Brodie’s ability to avoid the overly for Realmuto. They really need another quality arm in the pen, along with a guy that can play a good CF and hit second. Being greedy, I’d also like to see someone challenge Vargas for that rotation spot, but perhaps that can be done via a non-roster invite. The division will be tight in any event, but four quality additions have certainly put them in the conversation.

I still believe Machado makes sense…. 4 years 35-40 per

i think Machado makes us the division favorite and makes so much sense. If (and that’s a big if) he’s willing to play 3B

      Nimmo RF (L)
      Rosario SS (R)
      Cano 2B (L)
      Machado 3b (R)
      Conforto LF (L)
      Ramos C (R)
      Alonso 1B (R)
      Lagares CF (R)

Bench: McNeil (super sub – LH), Frazier (RH Power bat/corners), D’arnaud (C – RH), TJ Rivera (RH – utility), Guillorme (LH – IF). No real 4th outfielder, but Mcneil and Rivera can play the corner spots and Nimmo and Conforto can shift to Center. It’s a balanced, deep, flexible lineup with speed at top and bottom, and power throughout.

What’s left: My Christmas list without regard to money:

    (1) Outfield: Need one more starter, and perhaps a utility IF/OF that can be the 5th OF. My pick for the starter: Michael Brantley; Perhaps McNeil (or Smith) is the floater, but a right handed hitter would give a little more balance: Cameron Maybin? (Harper would be a dynamic piece and would put fannies in the seats, but I’m not a huge fan of spending that kind of money on one player and clogging the options in out years)

    (2) Bullpen: Lefthanded Relief Pitcher; probably more than a LOOGY: My pick: Andrew Miller, but there are still a few others out there. .

    (3) Backup Shortstop: Who plays short if Rosario sprains his ankle and is out for 10 days? Is McNeil it? I don’t think so. I would like to get a true glove-first infielder: Freddy Galvis? Iglesias? A. Escobar? not so sure here . .

    (4) Clarity at the infield corners: Is Frazier the guy on third? How to work McNeil in? Is Alonso going to be the answer this year on 1st base? If not, is Smith? if not, who? (I’m not on the Machado bandwagon – rather wait a year and take a look at Arenado after Frazier is gone)

    (5) Starting Pitching: a little depth – would Shelby Miller be a low risk/higher reward option – I know he has had some tough years, but I don’t know about his health.. what little I have looked doesn’t indicate he is still hurt. Gio Gonzalez may be another depth type guy. If not either of those, finding somebody would give some more flexibility to make a trade to clean up the fringes and settle the roster.

I am not sure what this all does to the makeup of the 25 man roster – I am a bit concerned about that with McNeil being one of the utility guys – can he play short in a pinch? is he your 5th outfielder? Do we need a 5th outfielder? Gotta think more on this one.

  • Metsense

Marwin Gonzales at the the MLBTR 4/36 would fit. In can play SS and all the other infield positions and the outfield also. He is a versatile player who is an average offensive player. His versatility would solved a temporary injury of a starter.

  • MattyMets

A Manny Machado signing would send shock waves throughout the league and especially the fan base. BVW would be treated like a hero and the Wilpons will have redeemed themselves.
Realistically, I see one more mid tier signing – either a righty OF or utility guy. Marwin is my first choice followed by Harrison. After that, it might make sense to wait out the market a bit and grab a solid lefty bullpen piece from among Silpp, Wilson, Blevins, Logan, Jennings , et al (not Ollie). Since we’ll likely be forced to trade the out-of-options Plawecki, I’d like to see a veteran catcher signed as a #3 we can stash in AAA.

  • Eraff

I’m with That, Matty. The Catching thing is now interesting. While I’d prefer a LH Backup, you can’t be picky. I remain a KP fan because I believe he can actually Catch a little, and I also believe He can compete with the Bat. He’s a ML Level Backup, under control with some upside— I vote Keep.

Will Travis be ready to Play?…as a Catcher? He already can’t throw (as a Catcher), so his possibility as a RH outfield bat and Utility piece makes him an interesting short term proposition, and a reasonable “3rd catcher”. He is incredibly over rated offensively…a stubborn expectation that has outlived 1500 MLB AB’s at a 712 OPS. I agree that he “feels” like a guy who can go 750— that would be interesting as a Catcher…… as he a noodle armed Left Fielder?

I believe they will let the LH Pitcher come to them…or they will build one…or find one later. I’d vote for Marwyn to fill the gaps for the first move.

IMO the most baffling move Brodie has made was tendering TDA. No trade value, not good enough to start, too injury prone and expensive to rely on as a backup. Although he is a better hitter than Plawecki (and I’m a better ping pong player than Keith Hernandez) I’d rather we cut loose TDA and use the cheaper and more reliable Plawecki as our #2. I believe now we’d be obligated to pay TDA either .5 or $1mm. This one move is really a head scratcher for me.

      • TexasGusCC

By having TDA, he had leverage over Jeter and the Free Agents. If he cuts him in March, he only pays 1/6th salary or $600K. He probably saved at least that for the Mets. If TDA’s healthy and starts off on fire, hey, you never know.

        • MattyMets

          Good point Gus.

FanGraphs now pegs the 2019 Mets at 85 wins and, inexplicably, the Nationals at 91. Yes, those Nationals who lost their two best hitters to free agency, and currently have a 3-man rotation and one power hitter. I don’t get the formula they use for this. And they always vastly overrate the Angels projection every year.

          • MattyMets

In other news, Harvey to the Angels 1 yr/ 11mm

  • Eraff

Moustakas: seems to be sort of the same player as Frazier, as a LH Batter. More than anything, his possible signing would seem to be linked to moving other roster pieces (McNeill?) in a trade for other needs.

McNeill has considerable experience at 2b, ss, 3b throughhout his Minor League Career…if you believe the bat, he seems like a very nice long term widget.

Would Moustakas be a 1-2 year piece to insure against 1st base?….Todd’s eventual parting?

Is Moose a slow biz day rumor?

    • MattyMets

Moose Tacos doesn’t draw walks or play the position nearly as well as Frazier. The Todd Father has his shortcomings, but he’s a good third baseman and a great clubhouse guy. I’m rooting for him to have a good year and not just cuz he’s from Jersey.

  • Eraff

I believe Frazier will have a dedcent year…don’t understand the Moose talk
