The current projections at FanGraphs have the Mets at 85 wins, which is good enough for the second Wild Card spot in the NL and an eight-win improvement over what the club did in 2018. According to these projections, the Mets make the playoffs on the strength of their pitching. They’re projected to allow just 3.96 runs per game, the second-best mark in the majors. The offense is projected to be one of the worst in the majors but at 4.18 runs per game, they would finish with a positive run differential.

Last year’s team scored 676 runs and allowed 707.

Of the 707 runs allowed I would be curious as to how many runs the starters gave up and how many runs the BP allowed

      All runs allowed:
263 by JdG, Thor, Matz, Lugo and Wheels in 697 innings.
124 by all other starters in 183 innings
314 by all relievers in 545 innings
6 runs by Jose Reyes in 1 inning

      There’s your 707.

The first set of starters was 730 innings. I added them with my eyes, and well…

I looked at a little differently:

Starting Pitchers (The Big 5) 3.39 ERA
Starting Pitchers (The Rest) 6.09 ERA
    Bullpen 5.18 ERA

I think the team needs a 5th starter. Time to overpay now? Or get lucky like the Phillies did last season and get lucky and overpay?

    • Mike Walczak

I believe that the Mets need another viable starter. It’s called IV, injuries and Vargas. Maybe we will find one under the tree tomorrow rather than the coal that we got from Alderson.

I have confidence in Van Wags. I have confidence that he will make some more moves to improve the team. Only time will tell though if the changes work out.

I also wanted to wish all a very Merry Christmas and thanks to those who make Mets360 happen.

Great breakout on pitching stats, which clearly shows that despite adding a top notch closer and top notch 8th inning guy, the Mets are two to three quality arms from fielding a pitching staff that can compete for the NL East and beyond. I can accept Lugo and Gsellman as depth for the rotation, as I could an addition like Minor, but that requires at least the addition of two more very reliable 7th – 8th inning arms.

Lugo and Gman are proven commodities. Leave them in the pen. I think its easier to find a decent SP like a Vargas type then continue to throw away money in the pen and over pay for Swarzak types.

What exactly has Gsellmen proven? People love to lump him with Lugo, but one had a highly successful 2018 as a reliever and one did not.

      • Pete

I think Gman still has the potential to be a solid 1-2 inning pitcher. Gman is not a closer and I wonder how much of that played into his confidence. Lugo was vastly superior Name I get it. I just feel that Gman will bounce back and have a solid year in the pen setting up
