In the past three years, the expectation of most fans was that Yoenis Cespedes would be the team’s best hitter. But with Cespedes likely to miss at least half of the year, who will be the team’s best position player seems to be a wide-open race. We’re going to measure this by fWAR, which will move beyond just “hitter” and include elements of baserunning and defense, too. There are four choices, along with “other” for your consideration. If you select “other,” please elaborate who you think it will be in the comments section.

Which hitter will lead the team in fWAR?

  • Michael Conforto (45%, 68 Votes)
  • Robinson Cano (25%, 38 Votes)
  • Brandon Nimmo (22%, 33 Votes)
  • Other (6%, 9 Votes)
  • Jed Lowrie (2%, 3 Votes)

Total Voters: 151

I voted Michael Conforto, with his shoulder injury in the rearview mirror and that sweet swing of his.

I’ll vote for Peter Alonso. I have a feeling he’s the real deal and will help the Met’s who will miss Cespedes.

I voted for Cano. He is a proven hitter both for average and homers. While I am hoping for a breakout year from Conforto I like the sure thing aspect of Cano and expect at least his first two years to produce a shot at the title. If Alonso ends up being their best hitter, given the way they have restocked this team, they might just win 90 plus games and take the division.

I voted for Nimmo, who is consistent at the plate. Conforto is an easy go to, and it would be great if he does lead the team, but something about his regular bouts of succumbing to lefty pitching troubles me still. If Cano leads this team, I think we are heading for a 3rd for 4th place division finish. He is going to be seeing a ton of new pitchers and that has a way of taking a toll on a hitter.

I’m just a little bit more optimistic Chris. Cano will lead the team in hitting but will be getting pushed by Conforto and Nimmo. Therefore the Mets will win their division!

He is Chris. I had a torturous time picking between Nimmo and Conforto because when Nimmo got hit by Rich Hill on the hand, he was leading the NL in OPS and was considered for an all-star invitation. However, he slowly spiraled until his hand healed and lost precious momentum. In the end, Conforto’s positioning in the middle of what may be the best batting order the Mets ever had, makes me give him the nod.

My expectation was that Conforto was going to win this poll easily. And in a way he did but he only got a plurality, not a majority. And I’m surprised at the level of support for Cano. I expected him to get votes but I didn’t believe he’d draw more support than Nimmo.
