Thursday catch-all thread (2/21/19)

It took nearly 20 years but the Mets finally have Alex Rodriguez in tow. Now an ESPN announcer, Rodriguez took time out from being recognized as J-Lo’s boyfriend to be a special guest in Spring Training for the Mets. It’s unclear if he did much more than shake hands and talk with his old teammate Robinson Cano – but there you go.

So, in 20 years we can look forward to Bryce Harper or Manny Machado visiting Port St. Lucie.

Just picked up a book titled “Smart Baseball (The Story Behind the Old Stats that are Ruining the Game, the New Ones that are Running it, and the Right Way to Think About Baseball)” by Keith Law. (2017)

I think it’s the best I’ve read on this topic since “Moneyball” because it’s not a completely overloaded geekfest of the latest stats, it doesn’t assume a great familiarity with modern metrics, and has a surprising sense of humor. A real page-turner, and hard to put down. I give it 9 thumbs up

Thanks Jose, I’ve just started ‘The Shift’ written by Russell Carleton who the Mets (swipe-to-text thought I said ‘nerds’ lol) just hired as part of their analytics department. So far, so good.

Just saw the first example of Alonso’s fielding woes. Rosario made a nice play, changing directions on a ball that hit the edge of the pitcher’s mound and took a weird bounce. His throw to first was low – but not in the dirt – and Alonso didn’t catch it.

Well, lets not forget that Rosario in his first handle made an error too in the exchange. This is how 2 simple plays with poor defense make things hell.

Any chance you can post a chatter?

Just tried to create a chatter with last year’s software and it’s now a paid site. So, back to the drawing board…

And next inning, Alonso crushes a ball to straight away CF for a homer.
