On a day where the Mets desperately needed length from the starting pitcher, Noah Syndergaard went above and beyond, as he both pitched and hit the Mets to a 1-0 win over the Reds Thursday afternoon at Citi Field in a game that lasted just 2:12.

Syndergaard pitched a complete game shutout, becoming the first Mets starter to record an out in the eighth inning this season. He ended the game with a strikeout of Yasiel Puig, giving him 10 Ks in the afternoon. Puig finished the four-game series just 1-16.

And if that wasn’t enough, Syndergaard provided the only offense of the day, as he crushed a home run the opposite way. Not only did it leave the yard, it would have been a homer with the original dimensions of the park.

It was the first time in two years that anyone in MLB pitched a complete game shutout and homered for the game’s only run.

The Mets kept alive their streak of not being under .500 this season, as the win pushed their record to 16-15 for the year. They’re now 6-4 in one-run games.

Great to see back to back strong pitching performances from Degrom and Syndergaard. All 5 starters have had at least a decent start in their last outing, with a couple of real strong ones. Now let’s couple that with some hitting!

Couldn’t agree more. This is the 1-2 punch we envisioned from the start. So which Mr Wheeler do we get next?

Does anyone else think Winker is annoying?

But he isn’t the first Mets starter to record an out in the 9th because Vargas did that (in relief) a month ago!
