The Mets pushed across eight runs in the first inning to break out of their offensive slump, and that combined with another strong effort by Zack Wheeler led the Mets to an 11-2 win over the Marlins in the first of a three-game set Friday night in Citi Field.

The first eight Mets batters reached base safely, with six hits and two walks. The streak was climaxed by Amed Rosario drilling a grand slam home run. Michael Conforto and Jeff McNeil later added homers. Overall, five different Mets finished with multi-hit games, including J.D. Davis and Conforto with three apiece.

Wheeler had an interesting night. He started off overpowering and finished with 11 Ks. But he also gave up nine hits on the night. The Marlins didn’t hit the ball very hard but had excellent placement on the balls with which they did manage to make contact. In perhaps the biggest surprise of the night, Wheeler was sent back for the seventh inning despite having thrown 94 pitches and with the Mets holding a nine-run lead.

In his last six starts, Wheeler is 3-1 with a 2.93 ERA. In 40 IP in that span, he has 11 BB and 49 Ks.

This was just the second blowout win of the year for the Mets, both coming in games started by Wheeler. The only other win by five or more runs came on April 23 when they beat the Phillies, 9-0. How big of a blowout was this one? Gary and Keith went through baseball cards for the last few innings.

2 weeks of runs in 1 game…and most in 1 inning!

I understand that the Marlins are lousy, but the Mets need wins and this was a win. Good job, now follow up tomorrow. 11 runs is nice but like Callaway said, it’s one inning and one game. While JD Davis’s fielding has been poor, he continues to hit and needs to play. With Lowrie getting closer and Carlos Gomez tearing it up in Syracuse, the best 25 May very well not include Frazier or Broxton.

I don’t understand why everyone thinks Broxton should go when he has three years of control and is a better bet than Lagares to be valuable, and Lagares has four and a half months of control.

However, I am happy to see that Wilpon wants to see more of the productive players and less of the crud on the roster like Frazier. I hope he got Mickey’s attention to stop kissing asses and do his job!

Gus, Given Broxton’s control, I doubt he will go based on a very small sample here. Just saying that by meritocracy alone he is on very thin ice.

I think you are failing to consider that while Broxton still has 3 years of team control left, they will not be at the near-minimum he’s making now. Even i you assume you think he’ll bounce back to his 2017/2018 levels, that production might be worth the first year of arbitration, but maybe not the 2nd and highly unlikely for the third.

You can think of it as having 3 options with a rising salary tb- but it’s not a guarantee that we’ll be exercising all 3 of them

        Good point…

    From the NY Post:
“When we play the Marlins,” McNeil said, “we have to win every single game.”

LOL, expect this on the Marlins bulletin board. I wish the Mets just had more common sense as a team and stop with the loud comments that motivate their opponents. You haven’t done squat in years and the GM talks, the player talk… That comment to me is very disrespectful and unnecessary.

Gut reaction: unfortunately McNeil is right. They have to win every game against Miami because they aren’t winning against other opponents that they should have won. The next 2 days should tell if this team can stay focused.
Wheeler pitched a good game. He should have been extended last winter.
I enjoyed watching Dom Smith play first base last night in the late innings.
I also like Davis. He can also play the corner Outfield. Davis, Smith and McNeil should get Outfield instruction everyday. That is what a contending team would do to accommodate these Young, hungry players.
The dismantling of the Marlins should have never been allowed by the commissioner. The Marlins are pathetic. A black eye for baseball

Maybe McNeil should say, “I am the straw that stirs the drink”.

When your team is mediocre, somebody has to get fired up and make statements like McNeil. Oooooooh, let’s be afraid. We may wake up the scary Marlins AA team.

I was a big fan of Jeter as a player, but as a baseball executive, he sucks.

It’s only one game but maybe a good start to hitting. I think Broxton is out of options so they can’t send him down. That’s means they should trade Lagares but that won’t happen until late July. McNeil continues to impress each game out and Alonso is a breath of fresh air. Don’t discount how well Wheeler threw and now the big two are getting ready for their turn on the bump. And yes the Marlins are a terrible organization but it is their history of winning and immediately dumping their roster. They often go that route to rebuild. Since they have two championships in a fraction of time of how long it took us to do the same, whose to say they have the wrong approach. Let’s pick up a back to back win today!
