I hope you’ve been good because I have a treat for you. Below is a video narrated by our own Lindsey Nelson and prominently featuring Tug McGraw. The subject is bullpens and the date is 1971 and the talk is about how starters no longer pitch complete games and the reason there are fewer .300 hitters is because instead of feasting on tired starters, hitters now have to face power arms from the bullpen.

If you remember 1960s and 1970s baseball or just dig seeing old footage, you’ll absolutely love this. It’s a scratchy film and no one will confuse it with anything done in HD. But it’s just awesome.

      That’s wonderful news about Darling!

Partly makes up for the news that Cano is back that day.

What a fantastic video. Let’s bring up the youngsters!

I live in Austin, TX and Bretty Baty’s high school is the arch-rival of the school my kids went to. So I have been following him a bit. His school is a favorite to win the TX state championship in the highest class, 6A. He’s a solid pitcher, with a 6-0 record, but of course it about his batting that had him go to the Mets. I am admittedly biased, but I like this pick. You’ll see if you read this link below that he’s a tremendous athlete, who played QB in a strong program (Lake Travis HS is an NCAA/NFL QB machine, with Baker Mayfield as the most recent prodigy and was offered a basketball scholarship. I dig that they say he can play in the outfield. If he truly can mash ala Alonso but from the left side, there’s plenty to be hopeful about.

Anyhow, check this link if interested from the local Austin paper.

Thanks for sharing AB. Makes you wonder if he actually signs, something like 4M$ slot I think.

It sounded like he’d go play for University of Texas if he went late in the draft. The local hopefuls had him possible going to the Rangers at 8 but I think the consensus was high teens. Since he went sooner and if the Mets pay fair market value (a big if, I know), I bet he signs.

If Brodie’s initial draft pick can’t be signed, that should be a fireable offense. I just can’t imagine you’d take a high school kid in the first round without knowing that he’s ready and willing to turn pro.

    • Chris F

      Tanous said he will sign.

  • Mike Walczak

He had better sign. If he was my son, and they offered him four million to play baseball, I’d tell him to sign as soon as possible.

    Andres Gimenez

Report date is June 4, 2019. Fresh meat!

    And for Anthony Kay:

    Anthony Kay

I haven’t heard these yet, but looking forward to them.

A Met player tied Babe Ruth in a major statistical category last night!

No, it wasn’t Robinson Cano and steals (Babe’s got him by a 123-51 margin) but rather Jason Vargas and Wins. Both Ruth and Vargas have 94 career wins. Sure, it took Vargas considerably longer to get there – and Ruth has those homers, too – but we get so jaded in regards to Vargas and look to minimize (or replace him) at every chance possible.

Since the outing where he only lasted 0.1 IP on 4/13 – Vargas has a 1.85 ERA and a 1.103 WHIP. Yeah, he’s not that good. But much like with Dominic Smith – ride it for as long as it lasts.

    Good news/Bad news:

Good news: Thomas Szapucki is back on the map, going 2.1 innings in Carolina last night. Only about time the kid got throwing again.

Bad news: Giminez goes on injured list with a wrist injury.
