The first game against a tougher schedule did not turn out so hot for the Mets, as they dropped a 5-1 decision to the Rockies Friday night at Citi Field.

After threatening previously to break up the successful Jacob deGromTomas Nido combination, the Mets did it this game and the results were less than good. deGrom gave up two runs in his first four innings and generally looked either uncomfortable or irritable when he was on the mound. He missed spots badly all game long.

But despite all of that, deGrom went six innings and fanned 10. Callaway elected to let deGrom hit in the fifth inning, even though he had thrown 100 pitches. Maybe he should have let him pitch the seventh, too.

Actually the seventh inning wasn’t the issue. Robert Gsellman struck out the side in the seventh. It all fell apart for the Mets in the eighth. Drew Gagnon gave up three runs, thanks to two homers. In his last 3.2 IP, Gagnon has allowed 7 ER. He should be the last guy in the pen and if the Mets would commit to using relievers for multi-inning appearances on a consistent basis, he should be sent to the minors.

Michael Conforto provided the only run with a solo homer. Dominic Smith went 2-3 with a double and a walk. Ramos went 0-4.

Not much to do this one as other than Conforto and Smith none of the Mets ad good at bat and were getting dominated by a guy that strikes no one out ever and usually gives up hard contact. One of the biggest at bat of the game was Alonso swinging 3-0 and hitting into a double play, I had no issue with giving arguably the best hitter on the team a 3-0 hit sign as all managers do that I just think Pete should have waited for a better pitch.

I didn’t have an issue going to Gagnon in the 8th though I preferred going Font you just can’t go to Familia, Diaz, Gsellman and Lugo every day or you’ll kill their arms. I mean look how good Gsellman was after a few days off. I don’t understand why Mickey didn’t bring in Santiago to face Dahl when Santiago was warming up for Dahl and Mickey paid for not making a move twice as both lefty hitters homered vs Gagnon. I guess we’ve seen why Gagnon was a minor league lifer.

DeGrom was solid as his fastball was great but he got hurt a bit with his slider and the offense and bullpen didn’t support him. Hopefully Matz can pitch well and get better offense behind him.

Yup and yadda yadda and Gsellman and Brodie and then deGrom then he then and Smith with and Familia yadda yadda and Nimmo and Nido and yadda he then the ball Nubbies and yadda yadda….. and Cano $100 million. Dumb as a bag of hammers! everyone has the answer. Yup… They just suck! and just plain stupid, not sure which one should be #1

Mickey Callaway channeling his inner Tony Robins Broadie.

“We just have to make sure everybody understands what the situation is. Communication is paramount and that the players understand we’re just trying to win and everybody wants to contribute the best they can.” Mickey Callaway

Let’s clearly blame this one on our lack of hitting as well as throwing a AAA arm out late in a tight game. Smith continues to rake and must be out there somewhere. Or he needs to go in a deal for a good reliever as his value can’t be higher than it is now. With Frazier hitting the ball, plant him at third and McNeil at second, where he should have been the starter since day 1. Can’t blame Ramos for less than stellar pitching as he caught a great staff in DC and no one bitched about Scherzer or Strasburg or any of the rest of that staff suffering. Jake did his part giving up only 2 runs. Back at it today. Let’s take game 2!

Gut reaction: frustration. They had the pitching matchup and couldn’t win. Degrom only gave up two runs in six innings. The hitters didn’t get it done. It just seems that the Mets or not firing with all their cylinders. If you act, as you think, the Missing Link , synchronicity. (The Police).

I liked the move Callaway made letting deGrom pitch the 6th. I wish he would have double switched Gsellman into the game so that he could pitch more than one inning. The bottom line is that they only scored one run so it didn’t make a difference that Gagnon had an off night. Callaway still has his first-tier relievers well rested. Let’s get game 2 and the series!

Right on Metsense. I agree on the double switch. Seems Callaway doesn’t manage to the game, but rather to some predetermined reasoning.

Sorry guys, your Gsellman idea has very little merit.
In his last 7 appearances, Gsellman has been scored upon in 6 of them (including the most recent one when he was obliterated by the Giants), so the idea that he could survive 2 innings and keep us in the game is nothing more than hindsight analysis.
You should have been absolutely thrilled he even got thru 1 inning unscathed.
