Steven Matz pitched the Mets’ third shutout of the season, as he blanked the Pirates on 99 pitches. Backed by the HR exploits of Michael Conforto and J.D. Davis, the Mets emerged with a 3-0 win Saturday night in Citi Field. The win upped the Mets’ record after the AS break to 9-5, tying their best 14-game stretch of the season.

New York now stands with a 49-55 mark. At six games below .500 this is the team’s best mark in a month, since a 7-game losing streak in late June sunk their season. The Mets have 11 more games in the soft part of their schedule, before things take a hard turn when they host the Nationals on August 9.

Gut reaction: this was an enjoyable game to watch. Matz dominated. Davis stepped up with Smith being injured and that was a good sign. This is this soft part of the schedule so let’s not be fooled by Fool’s Gold. We should remember how the Mets have gotten into this position and use the opportunity of the trading deadline to see if they can improve the 2020 roster by making some opportunistic deals.
The Mets may have to keep Frasier because of the injury to Smith. Frasier probably won’t get anything valuable anyway.

      Agreed, Metssense.

I enjoyed the manufactured runs in the DeGrom game but also the HRs of Conforto & Davis.

It’s a shame Davis has not been developed as he could have been this year.

I know we’re getting wins on sub .500 teams but DeGrom and Matz were enjoyable to watch.

I don’t to sound totally delusional but threw some numbers around before yesterday’s game.

Can our guys go 39-20 for the rest of the year? Yes I know the team hasn’t played to those numbers for the entire year. But were the Mets playing below their “mean statistics” and if so maybe those 39 wins are possible.

Then, as far as the tough schedule goes: playing Washington and Philadelphia is exactly the teams they need to play. Of course they need to beat them and of course one of the Cardinals-Brewers-Cubs group need to dominate the other two.

OK a lot of ifs, but four years ago it happened why not now?

Because if we dont make changes to improve, the 2018 and 2019 blueprint will rise again in 2020.
