The Mets hit three homers in the seventh inning to earn a comeback win and a sweep of the doubleheader, with a 5-4 victory over the Marlins Monday night. The two wins today made the Mets 11-1 in their last 12 games and gave them a 57-56 record overall, the first time since May 2 the club was over .500 for the year.

The Mets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning against Sandy Alcantara, a pitcher who has had great success against the Mets in his young career. But they couldn’t do anything else against Alcantara and soon found themselves on the wrong end of a 4-2 score. But Alcantara could only go five innings and the Mets made hay against the Marlins’ pen.

In the seventh inning, J.D. Davis led off with an opposite field homer. After, the next two batters made outs, Michael Conforto and Pete Alonso went back-to-back, with Conforto’s homer traveling an estimated 440 feet.

Gary Cohen worried that Seth Lugo wouldn’t be available for this game, after warming up twice in the opener. Not only was Lugo available, he pitched two innings for the save, retiring all six batters he faced. No Marlins’ hitter got the ball out of the infield against Lugo.

Edwin Diaz was worked hard in the first game and Lugo in the second. Neither may be available tomorrow but at this point, Lugo should be the team’s closer.

There should be no doubt whatsoever that Seth Lugo is the team’s best closer. However unlike Diaz, he is versatile in that he can pitch in different spots and over multiple innings. The Mets should use him in their highest leverage situations.

What an amazing season for a guy who was tossed around in trade talk in the off-season.

    Alther…. Hech….. Luis G…… Lagares…….:
I won’t add Nido to the list, although he belongs ——- as good as it looks now, these are empty bats and non competitive hitters.

Lagares and Alther—— Pick one. Hech?…. Tejada and Dilson are better players—-/ I think they’re better than Luis as well

We need the Medicine man to give us a miracle on Lowrie, Nimmo, Dom

It’s amazing after all the talk about adding depth that the 4 Mendoza line guys you mentioned are on the active roster. Most of the triple A depth moves didn’t work out so well. I am surprised also that Dilson or Tejada haven’t gotten a call.

This game definitely makes the 2019 highlight reel.
