The Mets used a six-run seventh inning to turn a one-run deficit into a laugher, emerging with an 11-5 win over the Royals Sunday afternoon. The victory gave the Mets the series win and combined with losses by the Phillies and Brewers, created a three-way tie at 64-60, one game behind in the Wild Card standings.

The Mets pounded out 16 hits, eight of which came in that big seventh inning. The top three hitters in the order each had three hits, with Amed Rosario adding three RBIs and Pete Alonso contributing two, the second on a solo homer in the ninth. Michael Conforto had a three-run blast in the first inning to start the scoring.

Zack Wheeler was given the early lead but could not hold it and did not factor into the decision. Jeurys Familia gave the Mets two innings and picked up the win. He allowed a run to end his scoreless streak but could have escaped if Todd Frazier could have fielded a hard-hit ball that was ruled a single. Brad Brach recovered from his two-run outing in his last appearance to throw a scoreless eighth inning and Edwin Diaz finished up with a drama-free ninth.

The Mets have an off day Monday then host the Indians for three, the beginning of a stretch that has them playing 18 straight games against teams above .500, a streak that continues until the currently 61-63 Diamondbacks come to town for a four-game series.

Nice win today. Davis going down is troubling but I’m glad that they gave Rosario an inning in LF. Given the alternatives in the short-term he may get more time out there. I think 5 wins of the next 9 would be outstanding and I’m hoping they can pull out 4. More than 5 proves that they are for real and less than 4 suggests that they aren’t.

11 hits out of the first four spots in the lineup with Rosario climbing to .291 on the season and new comer Panik hitting at a.273 clip since joining the team. Alonso continues to amaze and the BP turned out another strong outing. Their performance will dictate the rest of our season as scoring runs has not been the issue. Rosario taking a turn in LF and cleanly snagging a fly ball. Matz, Stroman and Thor on deck to take on the mighty Indians who have lost 4 of their last 5. These next three games will tell us a lot about this team. Maybe we get JD back with an off day tomorrow. Nimmo has played 2 rehab games and appears to be moving forward. Keep the faith. One game at a time.

    Interesting.

Both the Metsies and Philsies have identical 64-60 records. And yet, according to ESPN, NY’s chance of making the playoffs is 41.6% versus 10.1%

That’s quite a big difference. Could the Mets have such a significantly easier remaining schedule to justify this assessment?

    • Brian Joura

According to playoffstatus.com, the Mets have a harder remaining schedule than the Phillies although all NL teams are fairly close.

      http://www.playoffstatus.com/mlb/nationalsosrg.html

FanGraphs has similar numbers to what you have ESPN with above. Here’s how FG does their odds:

“To generate the playoff odds, we take the current standings, the remaining schedule, the team’s projected performance, and we simulate the remaining season 10,000 times. All the outcomes are averaged to find the probably of wining the division or wild card along with winning the World Series and various playoff rounds. If a team has a 90% chance to make the playoffs, that means that 9,000 of out of the 10,000 simulated seasons end in the team making the playoffs.”

Thanks again, Brian, for your well-considered response to my “green-horn” questions. Looks like them computer simulations are Mets fans too!

The bats woke up in the 7th inning. They were down by one run when Mickey had Lagares bunting in order to move the runner to third and play for a tie even though they were the away team???? In spite of his managerial decision his players would have no part of just a tie and they pummeled the Royals pitching and insured the victory and this series. Mickey needs to get the Killer Instinct. The bullpen once again had a good showing. Let’s go home and scalp the Politically Incorrect Indians and Braves. BTW I made my “reservations” for the Sunday game! LFGM

I thought about that too Metsense, but I realized that he already had Davis coming to pinch hit for Altherr and the Royals scored more runs up to that point than their usual average, so the odds were that the Mets can surpass. What really bothers me is Callaway’s quote that he doesn’t put much stock into analytics. When did this happen?

      Supposedly, Regan has fixed Diaz…

I don’t think Mickey can get a killer instinct. It’s foreign to him.

In the beginning of the year, we compared Rosario’s career path to Xander Bogaerts and said that he would be ready to take the next step, as Bogaerts did in his third season. So far, so good, and do the Mets need it.

I have a bit of interesting news, but I’m saving it for the Catch-All…

Rosario BL similar to the exuberant kid when first called up. A joy to watch.
