In his last two starts with Wilson Ramos as his catcher, Noah Syndergaard has 8 IP and 13 ER. Those are two of his last three games. In the middle of those three, Rene Rivera was behind the plate and Syndergaard threw seven shutout innings.

The Mets have something that works with Syndergaard throwing to Tomas Nido or Rivera. It’s baffling why they work so hard to avoid using something that has worked for the better part of two years now. Sure, you want Ramos’ bat in the lineup whenever possible. But with the Mets having their big guns off of the IL now, that need isn’t as big as it was when they were starting Luis Guillorme, Juan Lagares and Joe Panik in the same game.

Here are Syndergaard’s numbers with the three catchers named above:

Nido – 2.17 ERA in 22 games, 141 IP
Rivera – 2.52 ERA in 29 games, 174.2 IP
Ramos – 5.09 ERA in 15 games, 92 IP

This isn’t meant to slam Ramos. It’s meant to slam the person – whether the manager or GM – who insists on having him catch Syndergaard despite all evidence to the contrary on that being a good idea.

“The last 15 games for Wilmer Flores have been positively outstanding. He’s slashing .469/.500/.857 over that span, with five homers and 13 RBI. He continues to be nagged by lingering injuries, but remains a force every time he’s in the Arizona lineup.”

    SNY bringing the love…

Seems like another “net negative” that the Mets replaced with the more expensive Jed Lowrie. BVW showing his Midas touch… LOL. Danbrowski’s available, since they don’t like Bloom…

on the other hand, Lovullo has been using him as a replacement because his defense is so bad. With the magic bat run hes on, he will see more time in the field, until we know exactly what happens: no range, cant catch, cant throw.

Would you rather have Flores at 2B or McNeil?
Would you rather have Flores at 1B or Alonso?
Is there any circumstance you can play Flores at 3B?

      • TexasGusCC

No Chris, don’t change the subject. Would you rather have kept Flores and McNeil as the tandem or are you happy they traded for Cano? The argument last November was if McNeil fails, Flores can be acceptable at 2B. However, the anti-Midas went and traded for Cano and then signed Lowrie.

  • Chris F

You couldnt give me Flores. I dont want him on the field, and not paying 4M$ to ride the pine.

I dont want Cano at 2B. I want McNeil there all the time (not some messed up platoon).

With respect to Nido or Rivera catching Syndergaard as much as possible, this weekend was an example of a wasted opportunity. Saturday nite Nido caught Marcus Stroman, who has no particular preference as to who catches him, as far as I know. then Sunday Ramos catches Syndergaard. It would have been very easy to flip, Ramos, catching Stroman Saturday, then Nido on Sunday, a day game after a night day, catching Syndergaard.

Since this is a catch-all thread….has anyone thought about trying out Diaz as a opener?

    • Brian Joura

This might be worth exploring. Instead of sending Stroman to the pen like I suggested Sunday, perhaps Diaz can open and Stroman can come on next.

  • JimO

Right – give him some useful innings. Turn the negative into a potential positive. For three weeks, it could be a beta test for how we start things out next year.

Syndergaard is right. Pitchers have always picked their catcher. From Carlton to Maddox to Lester, if the pitcher has the hardest job on his day to pitch, isn’t it best to help him anyway you can? Another ego trip for our anti-Midas GM. Brodie’s best moves were made when he let others make them. Whenever he has stepped in to make his mark, things go wrong. No wonder him and Jefferey are so tight.

  • Chris F

Ronnie said last night that the team was 100% right. Pitchers need to throw to whomever the team trots out there. Period. I might note, Syndergaard is no Carlton, Maddux, or Lester.

Recommendation for Noah: toughen up buttercup.

    • Brian Joura

There hasn’t been a time where Noah has refused to throw to Ramos.

Instead, he’s expressed multiple times a preference to throw to someone else. The numbers back up Noah’s preference in as strong a way as one might possibly imagine.

The Mets are saying that doing things their way is more important than winning games. Instead of calling Noah, “buttercup,” you should say to Callaway or Van Wagenen or whoever is responsible — “Obtuse. Is it deliberate?”
