The Mets jumped out to an early lead and took the rubber game of the series versus the Reds, 6-3, Sunday afternoon in Cincinnati. Combined with the Cubs’ sixth-straight loss, New York moved within half a game of Chicago in the Wild Card Standings. They’re 4.5 games behind the Nats and Brewers, who hold the two top spots in a virtual tie.
Robinson Cano had an RBI double and Michael Conforto added a three-run homer as the Mets staked Marcus Stroman to a 4-0 lead before he threw a single pitch. But Stroman was unable to complete five innings, as he was yanked after 4.2 IP.
Four Mets relievers closed the game out, allowing just one run by Seth Lugo in the eighth inning. Justin Wilson struck out two in the ninth to pick up his fourth save of the year. Brad Brach got the win with 1.1 scoreless innings.
J.D. Davis homered in the sixth inning and Brandon Nimmo went deep in the ninth for the Mets’ final runs. It was the 20th homer of the year for Davis and the fifth home run this month for Nimmo, who has a 1.092 OPS in 19 games since being activated from the IL.
The final score did not reflect how nail biting the game really was.
