Today could be the last start that Zack Wheeler makes for the Mets. If so, it’s fitting that it will be against the Marlins, the team that he’s done his best work against. Lifetime, Wheeler is 7-2 with a 1.77 ERA against Miami.

In his last six games against the Marlins, Wheeler is 5-1 with a 1.26 ERA. In his only loss in this stretch, Wheeler struck out nine and did not allow a walk over six innings but was done in by two unearned runs.

The only bad start Wheeler had against the Marlins lifetime came in 2017, when he gave up 5 ER in 4 IP while making his first start in the majors after missing two seasons while battling back after TJ surgery.

Wheeler enters his final game of 2019 on a roll. In his last five games he has a 1.41 ERA with a 3.5 K/BB ratio. The key to his recent success is that he has not allowed a HR in 32 IP in this span.

I’d like to start taking odds that Calaway is fired after Sunday’s game. Right now I’ll say 100%. How this season might of turned out with a competent manager? Let’s see if the Cubs fire Maddon. Would you trade Calaway for Maddon?

I would rather see they resign Wheeler and see what they can get for Thor. If they are overwhelmed then pull the trigger. I also agree with Pete Sunday will be Mickey’s last game and I would take Maddon in a heartbeat. I wouldn’t mind seeing Showalter in blue and orange either.

Agree with everything Michael said. I’ve been saying for a year that the Mets should offer Wheeler something like 3/45 and see if he bites. He has phenomenal stuff and just need to avoid that one bad inning, unlike Thor who sometimes doesn’t have it and Matz who falls apart at the first sign of adversity.

I think Mickey is a goner. Yes, I would take Maddon.

Yes, try to sign Wheeler for 3/45 or so plus a qualifying offer. I doubt they can get a good offer for Thor, so keep him and help him improve.

  • Metsense

Definitely offer a qualifying offer to repress his market value and to protect the Met’s asset. 3/45 is reasonable with a ceiling for 4/60. This should have been addressed last winter before the Cano/Diaz trade. This was poor planning and poor managing on the part BVW.
Callaway should not be managing the Mets when the rises Tuesday morning.

On a more general level. Im curious, how many people think Wheeler will be a Met after FA.

    • Mike W

I dont. With the dearth of available good pitchers, I think somebody will overpay for him.

Wheeler to the Astros, because Garrett Cole will be much more expensive.

  • Pete

Wheeler is gone in FA. There are so many options out there that the Mets can build upon.
