We’re in the offseason, where people believe the Mets have an unlimited budget and other teams want to bend over backwards to trade us their best player. It’s George Costanza saying he’s figured out a way to get Barry Bonds and Ken Griffey Jr. and it won’t cost that much.

Nobody wants a repeat of the 2011-2012 offseason where the big free agent acquisitions were Frank Francisco and Jon Rauch and the big trade was the Angel Pagan for Andres Torres and Ramon Ramirez swap. Even if it is hard to ignore that that’s what happened when the offseason goals were to improve the bullpen and center field defense.

So, let’s take part in a little dream exercise. Instead of bargain bin shopping and challenge trades, let’s aim for the high end of things. Wouldn’t it be fun if Mookie Betts was patrolling center field? How about if the recent batting practice session meant that Yoenis Cespedes was healthy enough to play a full season? Imagine Gerrit Cole toeing the rubber for the home team in Citi Field! Or if instead of killing us with multi big hit games, Anthony Rendon was the starting 3B for the Mets.

Which one of these is your dream scenario?

What is the one thing you would pick to happen for the 2020 Mets

I voted for “Get a Full Season from Cespedes.”

This would be closely followed by “find the next emerging staff ace.”

For only one wish it would have to be the 2020 World Series championship. To avoid being greedy, I’ll only ask for that one wish.

Rendon is a game changer. The hit tool lasts forever. Even when hes lost half a step at 3B it would be on par with Wright in his prime.

Which one is Wright and which one is Rendon? Sorted by best wRC+ seasons, since we’re talking about the bat

      Player A – 151, 141, 139, 130, 110
      Player B – 156, 151, 143, 142, 141

I’m going to add one more mystery player to the mix because chris thinks he is the best thing since sliced bread

        Player C – 132, 130, 128, 126, 121

My first thought was JT Realmuto but he’s never had a 132.

Once I got back on the topic of 3B – it was quick to deduce him as Nolan Arenado.

I would wished for a healthy, average productive Cespedes..328/.498/.826 and 126 OPS+. He would not cost any more than was already spent. He would forced McNeil to third base and solidify that bench with Davis (R), Smith (L) and Lowrie (S).

Id like to see Zack Wheeler signed to a Mets contract

My vote was for a full year of a healthy, productive Yoenis

From a practical standpoint (yeah, I know we aren’t supposed to be thinking practical) we are signing neither Rendon nor Cole. So, would I like to see a trade for Betts if Brodie were given sufficient payroll flexibility? Sure. As a matter of fact, I had proposed a trade of Jed Lowrie, Dom Smith and Andres Gimenez for Betts. I think that would do it.

Again, from a practical standpoint, excluding Betts, I would love to see Brodie trade for a quality, young CF like Byron Buxton, Mitch Haniger or Ender Inciarte. That might leave enough payroll flex to sign a SP like Cole Hamels, although I still would not feel optimistic of that happening.

I voted for the Betts trade because I expect Ces to play. Can you imagine 2 players back to back that could both hit 40 plus HRs. Yes I know Alonso hit 53 but repeating that is in uncharted baseball territory. Then pick up a reliever and have Diaz return to form. We are a playoff team with that scenario and should pick up another 5-7 wins. Stroman jumps in for Wheeler meaning we are looking to replace a 5 not a 2 or a 3. Ready for Brodie to make a splash. Otherwise why is he here?
