So, the bullpen’s been bad but we’re kind of used to that by now. But how poorly the starters are performing is something we haven’t seen in awhile. Through 12 games, the starters have a 4.58 ERA. While it’s silly to compare 12 games to full seasons, the Mets had a 4.50 or greater ERA from their starters only one time in the last decade. And it’s not like the ’10s were filled with great teams the whole decade, either.

And the starters’ ERA is that high despite terrific pitching by Jacob deGrom and unexpected solid results from David Peterson. But the other three have been varying degrees of awful. Steven Matz, Rick Porcello and Michael Wacha have combined to allow 24 ER in 29.1 IP and that includes a 6 IP, 1 ER performance from Matz in the second game of the season. Take out that start and our trio has put up 23 ER in 23.1 IP in six outings.

Porcello has been horrific in his two starts and we’ll see how serious the Mets are about competing in this shortened season if they keep him in the rotation once Marcus Stroman returns.

If a team loses starters like Wheeler, Syndergaard, and Stroman and tries to get by with retreads, they will have results like the Mets are seeing.

John, you are spot on. I have said several times, that what can we expect in theory of a trade of Syndergaard and Wheeler for Porcello and Wacha. There is no surprise.

But, I didnt expect a 4-8 start. Interesting in last nights game how the bullpen pitched when they were two runs behind.

What is a nice surprise is how Peterson is a battler. Also like that Gimenez is getting an audition. So far, I like what I see.

Not worried about Alonso. He will turn it around.

Agree with John above. That is why the bats need to deliver, and the RISP so far may be the biggest cause for their record.

It appears getting hits has not the problem but timely hits

Surprisingly the Mets have the 2nd highest BA behind only the Coors fueled Rockies and have the highest team OBP among NL teams.

They are also not getting power either just the 3rd worst ISO. Mostly a singles and walks club so far.

In watching the games, there appears to be a real dearth of hard hit balls.

Timely hitting definitely an issue. I haven’t noticed us hitting into the shift a lot though. Anyone have any thoughts on that?

Luis Carpio added to the Mets’ 60-man roster. Hard to imagine a scenario where he makes the big club but at least he’ll get reps in Brooklyn this way.
