The Mets hit five home runs en route to setting season highs in both hits and runs to back Jacob deGrom, who was his usual terrific self, as the Mets won in a laugher, 14-1, over the Phillies Sunday afternoon. The win raised the team’s record in blowouts – typically a strong measure of a team’s quality – to 8-3. The Mets have now won four of their last five games and scored 40 runs in that span.

The Mets scored in six of the eight innings they batted, as they pounded out 17 hits. Brandon Nimmo, Michael Conforto and Pete Alonso each had three hits, while Dominic Smith had four. Nimmo had one of the team’s five homers, while Alonso had two. Jeff McNeil also went deep, as did Wilson Ramos, who struck out in his first four ABs. Ramos became the first Met to homer in a game with a Golden Sombrero since Bobby Bonilla. Meanwhile, Smith had three doubles and upped his OPS to 1.043 on the season.

In a game with such a tremendous offensive outburst, it’s easy to overlook deGrom’s fantastic outing. He fanned 12 in seven innings, thanks to 35 swings-and-misses. His only blip was allowing an opposite field homer to the backup catcher in the second inning. The outing lowered deGrom’s ERA to 1.69 and the Mets won for the sixth time in eight deGrom starts in 2020.

After dropping their first four games this year against the Phillies, the Mets have now won back-to-back games. They’ll go for the series win in a day game tomorrow, going up against old teammate Zack Wheeler.

Offense heating up and the nl is so weak beyond the Dodgers, Padres, and Braves. The Mets might make make the playoffs at two or three games under.Hopefully Cohen won’t be fooled into retaining Brodie.

Gut reaction: The Mets need to get hot and today was a start. The offense has hit all year, it was the pitching that couldn’t keep it together. If the starting rotation can become five fairly reliable pitchers and the bullpen can be shortened to whatever reliable arms are there, the Mets can make a run. The schedule is not doing them any favors, lots of Braves, Phillies, Blue Jays and Rays remaining.

Gut Reaction: I wish that you could save runs in a run bank and use them in a future game.
The deGromintor was superb and the offense was awesome.
Brach pitched by 8th with a 7-1 lead and Shreve pitched the 9th with a 14-1 lead. I wish you could save effective relievers and use them in a future game. Oh, wait a minute, I think you can do that.

I was ok with Brach pitching the 8th but they needed to use someone besides Shreve for the 9th. Would have been a good time to use Erasmo Ramirez or Robert Gsellman.

Agree on the runs bank and usage of Shreve. I saw somewhere that JDM has 35 swings and misses. The guy is absolutely dominant.
