On Wednesday Bernie Madoff died in prison. As hard as it is to believe now, there will come a time when every Mets fan doesn’t know that name. However, it will be curious to see if Madoff or Wilpon is the name that takes on the M. Donald Grant torch of reviled team villain. More people know Grant’s name than Linda de Roulet – who according to Wikipedia is still alive, even if unsure of how old she is. Of course, Wilpon was around the Mets much longer than de Roulet. But Fred Wilpon spent money when the Madoff money was available. That doesn’t make him innocent, by any stretch. It just doesn’t fit the profile of the villain twisting his curly mustache, devising his next nefarious scheme.

Madoff operated the largest financial fraud in history, somewhere in the neighborhood of $65 billion. Wilpon used a loophole and his friendship with Bud Selig to go from being a limited partner of Nelson Doubleday, to equal partners to controlling owner at a favorable price. And he was part of the Madoff scandal. And perhaps worst of all, he installed his son into a powerful position in the franchise, despite having no qualifications for the gig. Non-sports fans would choose Madoff, without a second thought. Mets fans have to think about it for a minute.

In yesterday’s Game Chatter, Name gave us something to think about. With the weather uncertain for today’s noon game, he suggested that the Mets use an opener, rather than the scheduled pitcher of Jacob deGrom. Might be a way to get Jacob Barnes and Robert Gsellman some innings. Of course, with the next series scheduled for Denver, where snow is a possibility, saving deGrom might not be the best plan, either.

The weather is such a pain in the butt this time of year. Maybe we finally found a use for Gsellman?

Weather forecast is rain all afternoon. Saved deGrom, use an opener and use Lucchesi for bulk innings.

    2021 so far:
    – Mets SP looks solid.
    – Dom replaces Conforto as the number 3/4 hitter
    – Nimmo !
    – Guillorme at 3B whenever possible
    – Lindor solidifies IF defense immensely.
    – Alonso looking like a more mature hitter.
All things being equal, the NL East will be a dogfight. Every single game is important. Luis can’t afford to give away any games, especially to division rivals.

Not so quick on Guilorme, Davis is a good bat and maybe his defense improves. Dom is a hitter but so is Conforto. Don’t let a bad two weeks make you forget that. Most important, maybe that BP makes a big step forward. Diaz and then May,Castro, Loup and who knows maybe Familia!

article suggests Mets hold back deGrom a few days with wintry forecast in Colorado. Sounds smart to me.

I can’t understand why the Rockies would schedule night games in April. Temperatures always drop precipitously at night in the west, but at Denver’s elevation, this is particularly problematic. I dunno, I guess I’d rather send fewer people home happy than more people home freezing and never wanting to return to the ballpark… not to mention the way the players feel and how it affects the game itself. Just Stupid Scheduling.
