The Mets used a four-run sixth inning and another strong bullpen performance to earn a 5-4 win over the Blue Jays to win the rubber series of the match Sunday afternoon at Citi Field.

After the Blue Jays scored three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 3-1 lead, the Mets came right back in the bottom of the inning. Pete Alonso tied it with a two-run homer and Jeff McNeil came up with a pinch-hit, two-run double to give the Mets the lead.

Rich Hill started the game and gave the Mets five shutout innings. His pitch count was low so he went out for the sixth but allowed the first three runners to reach base. Seth Lugo came on from the bullpen and allowed all three inherited runners to score. So, the bullpen line will come with an asterisk but it delivered 4 IP with 1 ER on the day against a powerful Blue Jays lineup.

Jeurys Familia had a shutdown inning and Edwin Diaz struck out the side in the ninth inning for his 21st save of the year. Old pal Jacob Barnes surrendered the hit to McNeil and took the loss.

Next up is a five-game series against the Braves.

Strong 5 in Hill’s debut and all was smooth until the 3rd time through the order. Clearly they pushed their luck sending him out for the 6th even with a low pitch count. Then to the rescue came the polar bear with a quality AB and a line drive blast. Alonso seems locked in and that attitude is often contagious. The right Diaz came out for a scoreless 9th and Kudos to Rojas for bringing in McNeil to bat for Nido. Nice comeback win and taking the series against the hard hitting Jays was big. Bring on the Braves.

Gotta be concerned for Lugo, and Trevor May is a crap shoot… not good.
Need Loup and Familia to keep on keeping on. I think Diaz will be adequate. Still, would not mind a bullpen upgrade… Andrew Miller?

But Mets gotta be the favorites at the point. The Phillies are more dangerous than the Braves without Acuna. But the Phillis would have to play very well (not a given), get extraordinary improvement from their bullpen (highly unlikely), and hope that the Mets collapse… I just don’t see it. If the Mets get Max Scherza, get your WS tickets!
