Javier Baez gave the Mets the lead after they coughed up a three-run lead and Drew Smith and Trevor May shut things down as Edwin Diaz was out on paternity leave, leading the Mets to a 5-3 win over the Marlins Wednesday night in Miami.

After falling behind by four runs early in the past two games, the Mets jumped out to a 3-0 lead, with all three runs scoring without benefit of a hit. The biggest play was Baez scoring on a ground ball to the first baseman thanks to a peek-a-boo slide, one where he showed the catcher his left arm and then took it away, instead touching home with his right hand.

Carlos Carrasco was strong through four innings but fell apart in the fifth, as the Marlins scored two runs and chased him from the game. The Marlins tied it in the sixth, when Jeurys Familia – right after a Steve Gelbs segment saying how the only hits Familia gives up are bleeders – surrendered a gopher ball to Jesus Aguilar.

But the Mets battled back, taking the lead on an opposite field homer from Baez in the eighth inning. The Mets’ final run came on a passed ball on ball four to Brandon Nimmo, with Michael Conforto scoring from third. Conforto went 2-for-4 with a walk and scored two runs on the night.

Mets look to finish the four-game series with a tie in tomorrow’s noon start.

Conforto s 2 hits were opposite fielders. Perhaps the most important development of the night.

Totally agree about Conforto’s hits. Instead of getting well-hit balls run down and caught in right field, these opposite field hits actually fell in.

BB, the win is the most important development last night, but I hear you on loud and clear on MC. A couple of knocks to kick start his bat would be most helpful in the stretch run. Kudos to the pen last night as well.

Great win. Great slide by Baez and a big HR. Let’s not also forget his play in the field. Seems our chance each game is to score off of relievers and not starters, although we did scratch out those first three runs with some old fashioned small ball. Would love to see the bats finally come alive and take some pressure off the starters. Nice 4 innings from Cookie. Nice to pencil him in versus TBD and a stupid bullpen game where we expect 6 pitchers to all throw well. Looking for the split today and to stay ahead of the charging Phillies.
