The Mets will now play their toughest stretch of the season, as they play 13 consecutive games against the Dodgers and Giants. The good news is that after playing their worst ball of the year, the Mets have won three straight games and the offense seems to be showing signs of life. The bad news is that those three wins came against a depleted Nationals squad that might be the worst team in baseball right now.

Unlike when they played the Marlins in the beginning of August, the Mets did what they were supposed to do when they play a bad team – beat them at a great clip. The Mets went 1-3 against the Marlins and then lost three straight to the Phillies. Will winning three straight against the Nats propel them to a more competitive series against two of the top three teams in the NL?

First up is the Dodgers, who are 69-46 and who come to Queens having won two of three in Philadelphia. The Mets catch a break as Los Angeles will be without Mookie Betts, who is on the IL. Justin Turner will be questionable, too. But even without those two stars, the Dodgers are a deep team. Meanwhile, the Giants continue to roll on. At first it seemed like an unsustainable surge led by veterans playing better than they have in years. But here they are 33 games over .500 and on a five-game winning streak and it’s difficult to dismiss what they’re doing as a fluke after 115 games.

I voted wishfully, that the Mets would win 4-6 games. I’m hoping they do not get swept in any of the four series. Winning one game each series gets them 4 wins, and it is hard for me to see a roadmap that gets them many more wins than that.

The Dodgers are pitching Urias, Buehler, and Scherzer… who will this daunted Mets’offensive attack defeat among them? The way I see it, the Mets will have to get on a roll and start believing in themselves like Pete predicted… otherwise scoring one or two runs a game will not cut it. And it goes on from there. It is “into the fire” of a pennant race … I’m pretty sure the Braves and Phillies are primed to play well down the stretch, both energized by their newly improved chances at the post-season.

If someone would guarantee me 4-9, I would be tempted to take it. Hoping for 7-6 though and a new lease on life.

Although I voted in the 0-3 box, I think the Mets will win 4 also. What Brian noted about the (over?)achieving Giants veterans playing their best ball in years…..just makes it that much more of a bitter pill how our veterans all are playing so much worse then their track record would indicate. Just once before I die would I like to see all categories of the Mets; defense, hitting, pitching; be no worse then league average. That would also include injuries & luck.

It is baseball though, and so it is possible that the Dodgers & Giants play as bad against us, as we did against the Pirates & Marlins. Wouldn’t that be something ending up with 6, 7 or 8 wins!

I think 4 is right. Im guessing 3-5

I may be happy with 5-8. There may not be one starting pitching matchup over this range that the Mets have the “edge”.

    • T.J.

To clarify, a record of 5-8.

    I voted 7-9.

The good teams the Mets have played since their hitters returned – Padres, at the time Cubs, Brewers, Reds – the Mets have held their own. I expect them to do the same here.

4 wins but they’ll have the winning run at the plate 5 times in the ninth inning!

      +1

    • Woodrow

Make that 3 wins but theyLl have the winning run at bat in the ninth 7 times!

Is it too late to change my answer….

5-8. I would like to see 7-6, but I just dont see it.

I like 7-9 only because we tend to do well against other teams middle relievers. We came alive against the Dodgers once we got to the pen. Too bad we couldn’t do better against their closer who went out for a second inning. Got to win games at home though.

  • Wobbit

Came alive? Two bloop singles, a wild pitch and a passed ball… one hard hit ball and the Mets would win that game… the story for much of the season… not enough hard hit balls… most of them hot right at them… oh, and the Mets lead the league in hard-hit foul balls!

  • ChrisF

Well were down to 9 games, and so far, 0-4. to hit 5 wins now, they will need to to go 5-4, which seems rather unlikely.

    There were 11 votes.

    One person voted 0-3 Wins.

    That person is a soothsayer.

Hand them the money for winning the poll.

2-11. <– That even looks as ugly as the games themselves.
