It’s hard to say which has been more disappointing this season – losing Carlos Carrasco for half the year or watching him pitch once he came off the IL. All of the focus has been what he’s done in the first inning and it’s hard to argue with that focus. Carrasco has a 14.73 ERA in the first inning, which is tied for the 12th-worst ERA in the first inning for pitchers with at least 10 starts in a year since divisional play started in 1969.

But what if Carrasco had his runs evenly distributed among the innings he’s pitched? Then we’d just focus on the 5.73 ERA he does have, which is pretty awful. Does the fact that they are scoring a bunch in the first inning have significance? Is it some part of his routine, or early mechanics, that can be fixed? Or is it merely a 34-year-old pitcher who’s reached the end of the line?

For what it’s worth, Nolan Ryan is above Carrasco on the first inning list. Ryan had a 15.00 ERA over 13 starts in 1993. Ryan was 46 that season, the last one of his career.

Are Carrasco's first-inning troubles a fixable issue or is he done as a good SP?

I’d be curious to know of the other pitchers that are ahead of Carrasco on that list, how many came back to pitch the following year and the next year’s 1st inning results.

Lindor,Carrasco we all thought it was a great deal, a MVP candidate and a quality starter…Oh well you never know.

Carrasco has been awful this year, both due to his extended injury time as well as his performance.

Not much to do at this point. The guy is a seasoned vet, he is signed at a reasonable rate for 2022, so I’d just forget about it, have him study some file over the winter, and wait ’til next year.

As a team for 2022, slot him in as #4. The big mistake would be to slot him in as #2 or #3 and expect him to return to the Cleveland Carlos.

Look for the next Ray, my candidates Kikuchi, Gray, and Eduardo Rodriguez. Resign Hill to be emergency starter and a 2-3 inning reliever. Sign one of Stroman,Syndergard.

Give Carrasco 5 or 6 times through the rotation next season. If he isn’t effective by June 1, he’s toast… long relief until DFA’d. I expect Taijuan will be better in the first half next season.

Wow, we have players like Syndergaard, Baez and Stroman set to be free agents. Let’s give them a gazillion dollars and then, like magic, we have the same old Mets.

    Time for some creativity.

Let’s give Carrasco a shot to see what he can do next year.

Let’s see what management does with Davis, McNeil and Smith. By the way, Matz has 13 wins. By the way, Rosario had a decent year.

Let’s go Mets. Glad the painful season is coming to an end, while we watch our New York brethren take the lead for the top wild card spot.
