For the second straight game, the Mets fell behind early. For the second straight time they loaded the bases with a chance to get right back in there. And once again they failed to cash in, with Eduardo Escobar in the middle of fruitless ABs both times. The end result Wednesday was a 5-3 loss to the Astros.
Carlos Carrasco allowed 5 ER before leaving after 2.1 IP with back tightness. But the Mets’ bullpen did a wonderful job keeping the game manageable, as it produced 5.2 scoreless innings.
The Mets scored two runs in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to two runs. Starling Marte had an RBI double and Pete Alonso had a sac fly. Luis Guillorme followed with a double and Mark Canha walked to load the bases.
But Esccobar had an infield pop up and Dominic Smith, who doubled and scored the Mets’ first run of the game, struck out to end the threat.
The Mets have an off day on Thursday and travel to Miami for another series against the Marlins this weekend.
tomorrow becomes our biggest test yet. can we keep the season long streak of not losing more than 2 games in a row alive against the best pitcher in the NL?
I think we can.
and we did
As for Alcantara, when facing the same team a week later, he won’t be as effective.
As for yesterday, Escobar needs to go down in the lineup. It’s incredible how top heavy the Mets lineup has become. Nimmo, Marte, Lindor, Alonso, Cahna, McNeil that’s your offense. Davis, Smith, Guillorme… they rotate. McCann and Escobar are the bottom.
My gut reaction is why so many injuries to the pitchers? Can we afford another 35 year old in DeGrom next year and have more days missed? Anyone really expect him to stay healthy? If you re-sign Nimmo, can you go after Judge? Do you need to? Can Nimmo be a better value? How can get a reliever that can be reliable? I wouldn’t rush to re-sign Lugo. If I had Eppler’s job, I wouldn’t get any sleep. I hope he handles his rest better than I.
Gut Reaction: Disappointing that they were swept by the back pitchers of the Astros rotation. We have come to expect positive contact hitting in key situations. This series they didn’t do that.
On to Miami and take the series but it will be difficult. LGM
I still see a 13-12 record for June as a win. One thing that seems to be emerging is the team seems to perform poorly to begin a west coast trip lost first 2 in LA, lost 2 in Hou. Actually they are 2-6 for first two games after a long flight West. Perhaps an omen for the post season?
Before the month started, my thinking was that they needed to finish June with double-digit wins. I wasn’t expecting the Braves to put up a 14-game winning streak but can’t say that I looked at their schedule to see all of the cream puffs they were playing this month, either.
Still, the goal now is to have a winning record against the poor teams and not get taken behind the woodshed by the good teams. Basically, keep the good vibes going and wait until JDG and Max come back. And they’ve done that.
