People love Tylor Megill. He came up last year as barely a prospect in the average fan’s mind and acquitted himself well. He pitched a couple of nice games against the Braves and showcased an unflappable demeanor on the mound. Then, he was pressed into duty right away in 2022, drawing the Opening Day assignment with Jacob deGrom on the IL and Max Scherzer needing extra time.

Megill was lights out his first few starts. But then he had a clunker and then went on the IL. He was nothing special when he returned to the Mets and now he’s back on the IL again. Meanwhile, Megill’s full season ERA stands at 5.01 and in 27 starts lifetime in the majors, he’s 8-8 with a 4.67 ERA, which is an 87 ERA+.

What exactly do the Mets have in Megill? Does his first few starts of 2022 indicate what he can do when healthy? Are his below-average results to date indicative that he’s nothing more than a swing/depth starter? Does his high-octane fastball imply a future impact reliever? Is he most valuable to the club as a trade chit? How would you feel if he was in the package to get a Luis Castillo or Willson Contreras?

I could very easily see any of the 4 possibilities happening. Right now, with the injuries to the starters I think it would be very valuable to hold on to him as a depth starter and reliever. That checks two of the boxes above. If they could bring in an arm like Castillo I wouldn’t be opposed to moving him in the right deal. And finally with the uncertainty in the rotation for next year, is he one of the foundations of the starting staff? That’s possible. So I guess I’d say all of the above.

What is the difference between Megill and Peterson?
Carreer-wise Peterson has a 4.23 ERA in 32 starts with a 12-9 record and a 98 ERA+. Megill has a better strikeout rate and low walk rate.
Maybe either of them could be 5th starter in the future. Or a depth/ swing starter in the subsequent seasons but Williams fits in that role this year. Neither should be traded for a rental. Peterson walks too many to be a reliever. Megill could be an impact reliever because his strikeout rate and his low walk rate. If the rotation gets healthy then he could remain in the majors and be a reliever this year.

His early career reminds me of Robert Gsellman. Unheralded but came up big in his first few starts. Regresses statistically, but in the mind of fans/team brass, is still held in high regard.

I dont know how much trade value he has right now. Probably did earlier in the year but at this point it’s probably the lowest it’s been. The question is if the Mets should try to start him so he could maybe get hot to rebuild some more value, but that comes with the risk of him continuing to pitch at the mediocre rate and losing games.
