I would say my main plan was to cut salary as much as possible, but after sending out a few emails, no one was interested in aging overpaid players other than Byrd (who i could not get a decent deal for) and Utley (to a CLV team who wanted a veteran bat). There was some interest in Hamels, but no one wanted to give up 2 legit pitching prospects for him, so we ended up keeping him and rolling the dice. Once all that was in sight and noticing Phillies had a lot of cash to spend compared to a lot of teams, we eyes a legit SP to steady the ship. Pap/C.Lee and a few other contracts will be gone in the coming years so outbidding the rest seemed like a good move. Plus there was very little we could do with the lineup with all all those big contracts waiting to come off the books.
