Hicksville, NY native, Cam Maron is one of two Met catching prospects who seem to have the makings of future MLB players. His calling card has been a solid average with little power and no speed. His patience and contact oriented approach and his being a lefty (Hitting) makes me think of Josh Thole. Having another Josh Thole in the minors is not a bad thing.
Maron (pronounced Mar-in, rhymes with Karen) is a local boy and a Met fan. His local paper ran a nice little article on his signing back in 2009.
In his last 15 games Cam Maron has become another level of player. In the last 10 his triple slash is: .488/.523/.610 and doing a little math will show you that works out to an OPS of 1.132. The improved hitting has led to Cam being more of a free swinger, 2 BBs and 8 Ks but 8 Ks in 10 games is NOTHING, just ask Matt Den Dekker.
At 21 years of age, Cam Maron is on the perfect track to be to the majors by the 2015 season with a chance to come up sooner if he gets lucky. As it stands, it would make sense to have Blake Forsythe move up to AA and Cam move up to A+ in his stead. The Mets will likely be promoting a few guys from Savannah and are waiting for some clarity in terms of roster space and playing time.
AA Waiting for AAA:
A+ Waiting for AA:
- Wilmer Flores
- Wilfredo Tovar
- Blake Forsythe
A Waiting for A+:
You can see why it might take the Mets some time to get things in gear and start moving some of these players along. Camden Maron will just have to wait for the Mets to be ready to promote him for something to happen. My Suggestion: Drop Mike Nickeas, Promote Rob Johnson to MLB, Kai Gronauer to AAA, Blake Forsythe to AA and Cam Maron to A+ (Nelfi Zapata can join Cordero in Savannah)
Around The Minors:
AAA:
Matt Harvey Sighted – THERE’S Matt Harvey! 7 innings, 3 hits, 2 walks and 10 Ks. Those are the numbers that Met fans have been looking for. Keep it up!
Familia Wild – 6 walks and 1 K in his last outing. I wonder if the Mets moved the wrong starter into the bullpen.
Mejia’s Rocky Bullpen Beginnings – So far… it’s not been pretty. He’s managed 1.1 innings in two outings and has given up 3 hits and a walk in that time.
Collin McHugh Promoted – Looking forward to Collin’s first AAA start this week.
AA:
The Soup Stands Alone – Eric Campbell is no longer surrounded by Matt Den Dekker’s bat and Jeffry Marte has fallen away. Soup has limited power but positional flexibility.
Wheeler Awaiting His Call – Rotation-Mate, McHugh got his call to AAA this week. How much longer until Zack Wheeler gets his call?
Armando Rodriguez Slowly Changing My Mind – I’m not sold on him yet but he’s earned his way into the fringes of my prospect watch pool during his time as a minor league reliever.
A+:
Wilmer Flores All-Star MVP: 3 for 4 with 3 RBI and voted the MVP of the game. This has been a GREAT year for a GREAT prospect.
Blake Forsythe Hitting in FSL: He’s not had too many weeks that blow me away but he’s managed a season triple slash of: .265/.373/.453 and an OPS of .826. Not too shabby!
Port St. Lucie’s Lefty Relievers Will Strike You Out!: Adam Kolarek and Jack Leathersich have combined for 69 strike outs in 47 innings. That’s a 13.21 K/9.
A:
Travis Taijeron is Always on This List: People might notice that I stick to the positive stories in this column. Well… anyone remember the last time Taijeron wasn’t on this list? That should tell you something.
Rafael Montero Looking Good: He’s a fly-ball pitcher and will have worse numbers in Port St. Lucie and beyond but he’s been very sharp in Savannah.
NYP Big Names To Watch:
- Kevin Plawecki – Met’s Compensation Pick From 2012 Draft
- Cole Frenzel – Powerful 1B prospect with good defensive skills (Second Year in Brooklyn)
- Phillip Evans – Solid sleeper pick from 2011 Draft, Evans should still be playing SS for now
- Brandon Nimmo – The Met’s #1 pick from 2011, he’s got speed and power but needs LOTS of experience
- Julio Concepcion – Solid OBP and BA guy and likely to play LF
- Juan Urbina – Son of Ugeth Urbina is still looking to harness (control) his + offerings in Brooklyn
- Matt Koch – 2012 Draft pick, reaches up to 96 on the radar gun
FYI, I think Cam may actually be from Hicksville. That’s what Cyclones’ southpaw John Mincone told me a few months ago.
It’s what that article says too. His MiLB profile says otherwise. It’s not a big deal IMHO… Sorry Hicksville.
Thanks to Ellen for her help with this!
