1997 DONRUSS SIGNATURE SERIES BOBBY JONES
Today is July 4, which of course can mean only one thing: it is the day after the date on which both Jim Morrison of the Doors and Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones died.
The Mets never had the mediocre fortune of employing mediocre 2B/3B Jim Morrison, who spent the bulk of his career in the late ’70s and early ’80s with the White Sox and Pirates.
To his credit, this Mr Mojo Risin had some decent pop, wracking up 112 HRs over 12 seasons. Plus, he never released an album as resolutely crappy as The Soft Parade…
Believe it or not, there has never been a major leaguer named Brian Jones. So to celebrate the day in true Mets’ fashion, we’ll go with this 1997 Donruss Signature Series Bobby Jones.
Now, our Bobby here might not have formed the World’s Greatest Rock and Roll Band ®, and he might not have played that mind-bending sitar on Paint It, Black, but neither did Brian ever throw a one-hitter to close out an NLDS victory, or pitch a scoreless inning in the All-Star game.
So let’s just say that both men had their strengths.
The 1997 Signature Series set was a follow-up to the previous year’s effort of the same name, and the composition of the set is very similar to 1996: a truckload of autographs (inserted one per pack), the majority of which are base commons.
This Bobby Jones card is actually a Millennium Marks parallel version of the regular autographed issue, and is numbered 641 out of 1,000 on the back.
This card is the Lizard King. It can do anything.
This card is all right now– in fact it’s a gas.
Yeah, I could pretty much do this all day. But mercifully, I won’t.
Have a safe and happy 4th of July!
I was never a big fan of The Doors, although I knew plenty of kids who were. So I had to look it up to see which songs were on this album. Here’s a review you might enjoy

“Final stages of musical constipation”– I like that.
This performance is mostly a sad, couldn’t-walk-a-straight-line train wreck, but there a few moments that actually spark: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AD4TLL9Jh88
