OK, the first two episodes of Mystery Met were the equivalent of trivia spring training. I was just working on my proverbial fastball, and breaking off the occasional metaphorical curve.
But I’m loose and limber now, and ready to go a full nine…
So here’s the windup, and the pitch: Name the one-time Met pictured here, and you’ll win a 1964 PSA 7 Topps George Altman, plus a bonus to be named later.
The contest expires when the month of April expires.
Good luck!
You’re stumping me big time with this one!
To me this looks pre-1970, which rules out Mike Cubbage, Tim Foli, Rich Folkers, Ed Hearn, Skip Lockwood and George Theodore. It doesn’t look like Roy McMillan or Ken MacKenzie.
The red background is also throwing me off. My first thought was a ’63 floating head but I don’t think those had any neck visible in them. I guess it could be a ’58 Topps card.
You blurred the cap – which makes me think he played with another team in this photo. But that’s not a huge help because all of those 1960s Mets guys played elsewhere, too.
I’m going to chew on this some more and come back and make a guess later.
That was a tough one to find. The red background was the main clue and it is pre-1970. Not a card per say but a 1962 Topps Stamps # 140 of Lee Walls. He was drafted in 1961 and traded to the Dodgers in Dec before the Mets ever played one game.
You are correct, Skidmetsfan!
Walls was one of four players selected by the fledgling Mets in the “premium” phase of the 1961 expansion draft (the others were Jay Hook, one of the Bob Millers, and Don Zimmer). As you note, they then traded him to the Dodgers two months later, receiving Charley Neal and Willard Hunter in exchange. I think we actually fleeced LA on that one…
