I’ve written and written and written about the “Three Amigos” of Savannah. Nimmo, Boyd and Plawecki have been destroying the league (known for being pitcher friendly) since the season began. The trio has combined for 53 RBI and 52 Runs and as a trio they look to be about as good as a three prospect set as any team has in the minors right now, but Plawecki is beginning to look like he might be pretty special all on his own.
Let’s check the stats:

While it’s clear he’s not fast, it is clear he can hit and hit with authority. Of his 33 hits this season nearly half (16) have gone for extra bases. ALSO, some of those doubles SHOULD become homers in ballparks more conducive to power. What are the flaws, apart from speed? He’s not looking very patient. SURE, only 10 K’s in 22 games is great. If Matt Den Dekker could manage that ever he’d be in the majors. What makes those numbers less impressive are the 6 BB’s. It means that Plawecki isn’t sitting in the box and waiting for pitches. He’s going up to swing and hit. The good news thus far is that he’s hitting.
For those of you who like to focus on promotions, Plawecki is blocked by Camden Maron in Port St. Lucie. I can’t see the Mets promoting Plawecki until they’ve promoted others.
AAA:
Wilmer Flores needs more hits – The good news is that he’s hitting in most of his games but he’s not getting many multi-hit nights lately.
Collin McHugh makes it two in a row – That’s two BAD starts in a row. Less hits, but somehow more earned runs.
Zack Wheeler wishes this would STAY in Vegas – He’s not doing well. He’s still giving up hits and walks and in this last outing had some issues with giving up home runs. He’s striking people out… so it isn’t all bad.
AA:
THIS is Cory Vaughn – Who wants to be excited about Vaughn’s 10 game .342/.444/.632 line? Put your hands down. Vaughn is SUPER streaky so unless he can avoid the 20 game lull that usually follows, pay no attention.
Alonzo Harris wants to meet the Mets – He knows what he needs to do. Get on base and run. He’s getting on base to the tune of a .317 OBP and he’s stolen 10 bags in 22 games. That’s nothing to Billy Hamilton but on the Mets it’s a lot.
Logan Verrett doesn’t wish to be forgotten – Rafael Montero is the star of the AA show right now but Verrett is sporting a 2.48 ERA, 4 Wins, and 20 K’s. He’s also pitching deep into games.
Rafael Montero ho-hum in awesomeness – Normally I’d be very happy about his 5.0 inning, 8 K game but he’s just been so good that this was a “Down” week.
Jack Leathersich coming around – He’s really starting to look more and more impressive. 1.0 IP and 3 K’s is a somewhat normal Leathersich line.
A+:
Noah Syndergaard, now that’s more like it – 7.0 IP, 5 Hits, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB and 7 K’s. That is the kind of line we want to see more of.
Hansel Robles continues looking strong – Next opening in AA’s rotation is probably going to Robles.
Remember James Fuller? – He was in Savannah with Mark Cohoon and Brandon Moore once upon a time but while Cohoon was being promoted too quickly and Moore was experimenting with PEDs, Fuller was hurt. Well… he’s healthy and succeeding in relief. He’s starting to creep into my radar.
Full Season A:
Jayce Boyd delivers – 23 games… 22 RBI. That is a way to get you noticed. The big knock against Boyd is the lack of power and limited positional flexibility.
Brandon Nimmo struggles… sorta – He’s hit a rough patch after his 4 for 4 night. He’s 2 for his last 26.
Rainy Lara baffles Low A – THIS is the pitching outing of the week: 7.1 IP, 5 Hits, 0 Runs, 0 BB’s and 9 K’s. THAT IS IMPRESSIVE!
Is it just me, or no matter where we look, does it seem that we have more minor league reports than ever before? Of course, anything that helps me understand my Mets better is a plus, but the volume of info on minor leaguers practically halts my breath these days. Of course, we have an insatiable capacity to collect and distribute data on a second-by-second basis via a host of digital thoroughfares, and to keep things “fresh” digging through the hamper to find something different makes sense. I enjoy finding out whats happening in Low A! LOW A for the love Gil!
I cant help but wonder if for us Mets fans it represents all we see in this team: the future, especially with the present so predictably awful. We see a future skipper in Wally. A future rotation is scattered from A-AAA. There might even be an outfielder, catcher, and who knows what else in there. Im not sure Im in denial of the present squad in Flushing, but it is easy to overlook pretty much the whole shootin’ match. Im “all in” on the future…and hope that it actually does arrive. Searching for good news in A ball scares the hell out of me though. Im gonna start crying when I hear about breaking events in Kingsport.
Couple of things:
1) There are more Met Blogs then for any other team. Each Met blog offers some sort of nod to the minors. I do my weekly posts on Mondays(focusing on good news… cuz that’s what you want to read).
2) The Mets big-league club has issues and it’s not always fun to think about Ike’s struggles or … anyone not named Wright or Harvey.
3) This is the information age.
4) Just wait for the Short Season Leagues to start.
That is some batting line for Plawecki and Boyd’s RBI’s are very impressive.Nimmo also has had a great start.Lara and Matz are the stud pitchers. The Sand Gnats have a solid team.
If the bullpen continues it’s woes, then the Mets might be seeing Leathersich sooner than later. I’ve seen him, definately not dominating stuff, but he struck everyone out! Go figure.
Hang in there Chris, panic if we can’t get passed the Marlins.
Can we all just move to Savannah & St. Lucie and start rooting for the future NOW…?
Then the Mets will wind up switching those minor league teams with another team to spite us
By the way David, I love all the minors info and check the minors report every day. Last year I trolled through the minors info every week or so. I guess for me, this Mets season seems to be Harvey every 5th day, and then reading about who might be coming up to give this guy a hand!!
I laughed at the Wheeler line.
I’m okay with the hits and HR but Wheeler absolutely has to get his walks in check. He saw his walk rate went from 3.34 in Double-A last year to 4.46 in his brief exposure to Triple-A and now it sits at 5.79 here in the early going.
This is Exhibit A why I said in the offseason that there was no doubt that he needed more time in the minors.
Nice outing for Zack today.
6.2 IP, 5 Hits, 1 ER, 1 BB and 8 K’s
