I could have written about Plawecki again… If he isn’t earning some notice from scouts soon I’ll eat my ketchup flavored hat. Instead I’m going to focus on a player who is truly putting up gaudy numbers.
There are three ratios that matter to me when I look at a pitcher:
H/9 – Hits per 9 innings pitched: 5.99
BB:K – The ratio of walks to strikeouts: 11:27
K/9 – Strikeouts per 9 innings pitched: 16.2
Sure, Jack Leathersich‘s ERA is under 3.00 and his Opp AVG is beneath the Mendoza line, but it’s those ratios that separate success from impact. This season has been a little bumpy for Leathersich, he’s walked a few too many and had one dismal 2 inning nightmare but in general… he’s looking like a future lefty relief star and the Mets could use another Randy Myers.
AAA:
Wilmer Flores a Ho-Hum AAA Success – So… if you wanted Flores to take the PCL by storm, you will likely be disappointed. He’s hitting, almost every game, but he’s usually not hitting multiple times and not regularly hitting for power. The power is there, but it’s not on display yet.
Zack Wheeler turning it on? – In his last two starts he’s given up only 1 Run and 2 BBs with 12 K’s. That’s much more like it.!
Collin McHugh in no rush – With his chances of getting a call to the majors looking better and better, he has thrown three BAD outings in a row.
AA:
Blake Forsythe, a relevant prospect? – His 22 K’s in 17 Games might beg to differ.
Cesar Puello is heating up – He’s got a long way to go to win the trust of the scouts back, but he’s looked good through the last 10 games.
Rafael Montero’s BAD game – 6.2 IP, 10 Hits, 10 Runs, 7 ER, 1 BB, 5 K’s. That sure isn’t good.
Mark Cohoon teases us – He’s starting again and pitching well in AA. Listen to Admiral Ackbar on this one… IT’S A TRAP!
A+:
Anybody remember Travis Taijeron? – He’s starting to hit in Port St. Lucie. The outfielder has a 1.222 OPS over his last 10 games. (8 doubles and a homer will do that)
Domingo Tapia would like you not to swing – 20 Hits for 32.1 IP and there is plenty of impact there.
Noah Syndergaard looking like he’s over his first bump – 3 Straight starts where he’s looked good. VERY nice.
Full Season A:
Kevin Plawecki we salute you – More than HALF of his hits have been for extra bases!
Jayce Boyd keeps the pace – Nimmo has been out for a while and I keep expecting Boyd or Plawecki to falter… I’ve been waiting for a long while.
Rainy Lara could be Rafael Montero MKII – He’s got that control thing mastered and he’s got more “Stuff”. A lot to like!
Steven Matz needs to turn up the power – He’s not getting as many K’s as I’d expect a lefty with his velocity to get.
Can Beck Wheeler please one day relieve Zack – He’s pitching well in relief in Savannah but I just want to wreak havoc with Keith Hernandez’s score card.
For those about to rake, we salute you (that’s you Plawecki)!
And just in case nobody noticed, Leathersich went to the same school as Giants SR Victor Cruz. Maybe he can be another special player… or at least a decent reliever.
I would be more interested in seeing his dancing skills
I remember Leathersich as a Sand Gnat. He would pitch an inning, not wow you with anything to indicate a plus pitch, and you check the scorecard and he struckout 2 or 3. A regular Houdini. DePodesta is very high on him and indicated a 2013 callup Is possible.
Collin has unfortunately dropped the ball when the opportunity was there.
Tapia looked good last year with the Gnats (6 no hit innings when I saw him) and I think he is special and all the scouts think Synergaard is the next best after Wheeler (not Beck, Zach). The Mets will have some pitching pipeline in a year or two.
Matt Bowman is the first to be promoted from this very good Gnat squad. I don’t know much about him and haven’t read much about him. Is he flying under the radar?
Bowman strikes me as a less good Logan Verrett/Tyler Pill model.
I think Leathersich and Familia could turn into Myers and McDowell. And that would be the 7th and 8th inning, with Bobby P locking down the 9th. That’s our backend in 2014. To be able to shorten games to a 6 inning affair would be a real luxury.
Only if they are both crazy in divergent ways.
