About a month ago (on April 20th), we looked at the way the draft might play out for the Mets who hold the 11th pick in the draft. Since then, we’ve had some draft order movement.

Based on mlb.com, we’re seeing the top of the order now looking like:

1) Mark Appel (was #1)
2) Jonathan Gray (was #2)
3) Clint Frazier (was #5)
4) Austin Meadows (was #3)
5) Kris Bryant (was #4)
6) Colin Moran (was #12)
7) Kohl Stewart (was #7)
8 ) Trey Ball (was #8)
9) Sean Manaea (was #6) – *Note: recent reports indicate that he is dealing with hip and shoulder issues.
10) Reese McGuire (was #11)

Ryne Stanek who had been ranked number 9, has now dropped to number 12.  Stanek is a junior at Arkansas; RHP.

Jon Denney who had been ranked number 10, has now dropped to number 20. Denney is a Yukon H.S. senior; C.

**************

The following two new players have entered the upper draft echelons:

11) D. J. Peterson – Peterson is a junior at New Mexico; 1B /3B.  Peterson led Team USA in HRs and RBIs last summer.  He was drafted previously by Seattle in the 2010 draft but wasn’t signed.

13) Branden Shipley – Shipley is a junior at Nevada; RHP.  He can hit 98 mph with his fastball.  He also possesses a change-up and a curveball.

After these two players, we see a grouping of players already reviewed in last month’s article.

14) Chris Anderson (was #15)

15) Marco Gonzales (was #18)

16) Dominic Smith (was #14)

17) Jonathan Crawford (was #16)

NOTES: This is the second draft headed by Tommy Tanous for the team.  Last year, Tanous chose Gavin Cecchini (Barbe High School) with his first pick last year (12th overall).

This year, the Mets will draft again at pick #48.  There are a couple of interesting names around this position number:

27) Austin Wilson:  he was ranked 13th last month but has dropped to this position.

41) Alex Gonzalez: he is a junior at Oral Roberts University; RHP.  His fastball hits 94 mph. He also possesses a strong slider and a change-up.  There have been recent reports that he is swiftly moving up in the draft order.

48) Corey Knebel: he is currently ranked at the Mets second draft position. He is a University of Texas junior; RHP.  He is currently the University’s closer and should break Huston Street’s school save record.

56) Cavan Biggio: he is Craig Biggio’s son.  He is a senior at St. Thomas (Texas) HS.  He plays 3B.

76) Dustin Peterson: he is a senior at Gilbert (Arizona) HS. He plays shortstop.  He is D. J. Peterson’s younger brother.
