David Wright has said that without a doubt he will be back on the field in September for the New York Mets. For the sake of the Mets and the 2014 season, he should let his injured hamstring have extra time to heal for the touted 2014 New York Mets.
I know that David Wright isn’t the type of player to sit out if he feels like he is in playing shape; it’s one of the many reasons that he is so loved in New York. With the 2013 having no meaning for October baseball, the risk of Wright hurting himself again isn’t worth the ticket sales it might bring in. Wright is a huge key to the success of this team going forward and he needs to be 100 percent for Opening Day next year.
In his absence, the team has played quite well and has allowed rookies like Wilmer Flores to see time at the big league level, giving them exposure and possibly increasing their trade value. With nothing to gain from him being on the field, it makes more sense to allow these rookies to see time (September call-ups are right around the corner), get a look at some players and then have a plan for 2014.
Wright is a player; he hates the fact that he’s hurt in the first place. He wants to be on the field with his team helping them win games as soon as he can. But Terry Collins and Sandy Alderson need to sit down with Wright and tell him that he means more to the team in 2014 than he does right now, with the potential to hurt himself again putting next season in jeopardy.
He needs to understand that a couple of games in September don’t matter in comparison to important games in 2014. He bought into the future of the Mets when he signed his extension with the team, now he needs to realize that he means everything to this team in terms of his leadership and his play on the field.
For free agents to want to come to the Mets, they need to buy into the plan. Part of that includes David Wright being healthy and in the lineup. Any chance of a World Series ring in Flushing starts and ends with the Capitan. His value goes deeper than his play on the field and that’s why he should sit out in September. He needs to look at the bigger picture and how he can help beyond this year.
If he needs to miss the rest of the season than that’s fine. But if he can safely get back on the field I don’t have a problem with that either.
I agree. I’d love to see him come back for the stats (he’s still a WAR top -5), but why risk his last two or three proime years for a long lost 2013?
If he’s cleared by the doctors to play, he will probably start his rehab in the Mets spring training facilities and build his stamina and work on his timing. Problem is I don’t thinnk there is any professional games other than at the major league level at that time. So if it’s the last week of the season and he’s had no set backs then should play even if its only one inning and one at bat. It removes any question marks he may have for the off season.
You see this a lot. Players wanting to get o n the field even for a few games, provides an emotional lift heading into the off season.
Not only does it provide a lift for the team and the fans, I think it also provides a little boost for the player reassuring that they are back and will be fully ready for the next season.
Plus, I don’t think any player likes to have a season ending injury note on their stat sheet.
David Wright should have stayed off the field in August instead. Playing a day game after the night game he pulled up a little lame was foolish. Playing again the next day with tightness was even more foolish. Not to sit your best player for a few days in some inconsequential games and administer some treatment was foolish. Wright will always say he can play . It is up to management to protect their investment.
I just don’t see him being ready to play in a month since he hasn’t even started his rehab and the minor league season will be over. Let the injury totally heal.
Yep.
Why didn’t the press grill Terry Collins about David Wright mentioning to him he had tightness in his hamstring before the injury. David Wright NEVER complains about injuries. For him to mention something to the manager should of set off red flags in TC’s mind. I have decided to give Mr. Collins a new name in honor of his ability to deflect criticism. How about a vote for Terry Teflon as manager of the 2014 New York Mets?
The Mets should have David Wright take the rest of the year off he is more important to them in 2014 and with the development of Flores, Lagares and now d’Arnaud we need to see these players daily. Decisions will be made this off season to see what direction the Mets will take, one thing for sure is that David Wright will be at 3rd base for many years to come. In a couple of weeks we will see more new faces DenDekker being one of them he is highly touted outfielder in the Mets organization and as much as Marlon Byrd has done this year he is not the future of this team Matt DenDekker needs to play daily along with Young and Lagares this could be the starting outfield in 2014.
