Here we go with the final Mystery Met contest of the 2013 regular season. The first person to drop the correct answer in the comments section below by Wednesday, September 18 wins a 2007 Topps Heritage Billy Wagner Clubhouse Collection jersey card.
Hurry, before you are mathematically eliminated from contention…
Butch Benton?
Rich Puig
I like Jim’s guess.
However, I think it would be just like Doug to find someone even more obscure. So, my guess is Jay Kleven.
Jay Kleven was a catcher who logged a total of 5 ABs in the majors, all with the Mets in 1976.
On June 27 of that year, he pinch hit for Jerry Grote in the 6th inning of a game against the Cubs, with the Mets holding an 11-0 lead. Kleven grounded a single to left, plating Del Unser and Wayne Garrett for his only 2 RBI.
The pitcher for the Cubs that Sunday was a rookie named Bruce Sutter, which means that Kleven logged his only big-league hit against a future Hall-of-Famer. I wonder how many other members of the single-hit club can make that claim…
Kleven passed away in 2009 at the age of 59.
All of which is to say, Brian is correct!
hah!!! That is obscure…thought I had it.
