- Curtis Granderson remains a free agent
- Stephen Drew remains a free agent
- Ike Davis remains a Met
- Ruben Tejada remains the Mets starting shortstop
- Teams who’d have a use for Daniel Murphy are dwindling
Met fans… we’re losing it. From Sandy Alderson’s perspective, patience is a virtue and I can’t fault him for sticking firm with Granderson while the outfielder lacks a market to up his price. Things could break any which way and it’s driving us up a wall. Granderson could sign in an hour or two… or a day or two… or walk away from the table. The Mets could be forced to start Tejada at shortstop, sign Drew or even pull off a trade for Yunel Escobar, Didi Gregorius or Chris Owings. It’s the not knowing that hurts right now.
The way I see it, here is the Met roster as I see it:
- C1: Travis d’Arnaud [7]
- C2: Free Agent
- 1B: Lucas Duda [5]
- 2B: Daniel Murphy [2]
- 3B: David Wright [3]
- SS: Ruben Tejada (But Preferably not) [8]
- LF: Eric Young Jr. [1]
- CF: Chris Young [6]
- RF: Free Agent or Trade
- MI: Wilfredo Tovar
- CI: Josh Satin
- OF: Juan Lagares
- OF: Matt Den Dekker
- #1: Zack Wheeler
- #2: Jonathon Niese
- #3: Dillon Gee
- #4: Free Agent
- #5: Jenrry Mejia/Free Agent
- CL: Bobby Parnell
- SU: Vic Black
- SU: Josh Edgin
- MR: Jeurys Familia
- MR: Gonzalez Germen
- MR: Jack Leathersich
- LR: Carlos Torres
That leaves five players for Alderson and Co. to still bring to the roster through trades or signing. As time goes by we grow more and more worried that he’ll fail to achieve that. The suspense is killing us!

4 to go! Granderson will shift to left field should the Mets shift Eric Young Jr. to 2nd.
STOP THE CLOCK! 4 years, $60 million.
Now…Send Wheeler & Ike to Tampa for David Price.
No way!
That would be a terrible move. (I’m not supposed to type in caps and I’m not but I want to.)
I love David Price but that would be a dumb and short-sighted move that doesn’t actually help the team that much.
Trade Davis for Escobar? Sure!
Trade Murphy for ??? (I can’t tell you anyone, I’ve done research and came up empty)? Sure!
Trade Syndergaard for Castro? I’m okay with that.
You do not trade Wheeler for a pitcher who is at the tail end of his team-controled time for a similar player at the beginning of it.
Of what was available and affordable, this was a good signing and Sandy didn’t have to pay above market price.
David, if Lagares doesn’t start shouldn’t he play everday in Vegas? I like Recker as a backup. I’ m a minority obviously.
Now let’s trade for another OF (Davis for Joyce?) or a SS (Davis & Tejada for Cabrera?).
I am surprised we don’t agree on the lack of the need for a FA pitcher but I do concede a dumpster dive of Harang, Dice-K or similar is prudent. I respect your minor league evaluations so it leaves some doubt in my opinion to go with the kids.
So as you can see, although 2 would be great I can live with one to go.
I don’t know what Lagares has to prove in AAA or to learn. Sure, you could put him down there. I think he projects as a 4th OF so that’s where I have him.
BTW, Recker is fine for C2 but I hear the Mets don’t want that.
Davis for Joyce would be fine but I’d prefer focusing on a SS. Davis and Tejada for Cabrera would be awesome… Cleveland says no thanks.
I’m wondering if I’d be okay with Noah Syndergaard for Starlin Castro.
Mets don’t NEED FA pitching, they’ll still get some. Hoping not Arroyo. Hoping cheap like Dice-K and Harang, yes.
Relief is more my wish list of how it stacks up.
If Lagares wants to ever be a starter, he desperately needs to learn how to take a walk
Agreed, but I don’t think he’s going to become a .700+ OPS hitter… ever
