Here are my New Year wishes for some of our favorite Mets.
David Wright: to stay healthy and get the support in the lineup you deserve.
Matt Harvey: a quick and full recovery.
Travis d’Arnaud: to stay healthy and to start to live up to the hype.
Daniel Murphy: to keep improving your fielding and to raise that OBP 30 or 40 points.
Ruben Tejada: to find a nice comfortable spot on the bench. For those times you do play to remember you’re not a power hitter.
Wilmer Flores: to find a position to play where you can concentrate on hitting like we believe you can hit.
Ike Davis: to remember that a season is 162 games not 81 or 40. Also to remember what you did to hit 32 dingers in 2012. Oh you may want to take a few more pitches.
Lucas Duda: to not have to play the outfield again and to finally break that 15 home run barrier while maintaining your plate patience.
Curtis Granderson: to not be the second coming of Jason Bay.
Juan Lagares: to keep fielding like you have been and to hit .270. You’re raking in winter ball. Sure, it’s not exactly all major league pitching but hitting is hitting. (This is coming from a ex-pitcher.)
Chris Young: forget about last year, think like 2010 and 2011.
Eric Young: to get enough at bats to get 20 stolen bases.
Zack Wheeler: to pitch opening day and to look and act like a true number one or two.
Noah Syndergaard: to make your first start in the bigs in June and to still be racking up wins in October.
Jenrry Mejia: to be a regular part of the Mets rotation by the end of July.
Bobby Parnell: a full recovery from neck surgery and to keep building on last year.
Matt den Dekker: become this year’s version of Endy Chavez for the Mets.
Dillon Gee: to have the second half of last season all this season. Also want to give you a nod of my baseball cap for being the only starter to be there from opening day until closing day.
Jon Niese: to get back to the form you had in 2012 and to keep those walks under 2.5 / nine innings. (The two may go hand in hand.)
Bartolo Colon: that your body doesn’t remember that it’s 40 years old and a tad on the heavy side and that the stem cell corrected shoulder continues to keep winning games.
The Wilpons: a special wish, to see the light and finally sell the team.
I wish much of the same. I have higher aspirations for Tejada, however; I still think he can be a solid everyday player…but it’s up to him.
Jon Niese will probably get opening day nod, if for nothing else but being the “veteran” of the staff. Followed by Colon, Gee, Wheeler.
Colon will start opening day and then Niese(because Terry likes to have a lefty inbetween two
righty’s) Gee and Wheeler or Wheeler and Gee either way! There not paying Colon 10 million a
year to pitch 4th! He won 18 games this year and there’s nobody else even close! He is the
ace this year!!
Except for the 1st game, Niese will be starting between 2 righties all year. He’s the only lefty they have.
Ike Davis will not get enough AB’s if kept to hit that many HR as he would not be an every day player anymore.
30 or 40 points for Murph would be a huge increase. That may be a bit too much to hopefor unless his BA goes up 30-40 points.
Wheeler will not start opening day. Opening Day will either be Niece or Colon…or Gee. Wheeler right now is the times 3rd or 4th starter believe it or not. He has 3 players with good resumes, with more experience ahead of him. This is why the Mets are in good shape pitching whys.
My biggest fear right now is EY starting and Legares being a defensive replacement late since they feel EY is the only real leadoff guy they have. It kind of is scary knowing that Tejada will probably be leading off if they keep Legares in the lineup, but that’s the way it goes.
My comment about Wheeler was based on a comment he made, but yeah in thinking about it yeah they will probably have Colon pitch the opener, but they still might hold Colon for day 2.
The thing that worries me about Murph is that his OBP has dropped 20 points each of the last two years.
My comment about Wheeler was based on a comment he made, but yeah in thinking about it yeah they will probably have Colon pitch the opener, but they still might hold Colon for day 2.
