“It was a strange season coaching under that new [Alderson] regime,” Wilson writes. “I felt like I was watching the deterioration of the Mets organization. They seemed to have no identity.
“My concern was that the character of the players they were looking for superseded the talent they brought to the table. Character on a team is important, but you’ve got to have the horses to win.”
So if I’m interpreting this right, Mookie Wilson feels like Sandy Alderson and Company have presided over the deterioration of the Mets organization because they wanted to bring in high character players. Interesting theory, Mookie, but as Karl Ravech would say, I’m not buying that the Mets organization is dead, or deteriorating for that matter.
Really, the sad part about this is that the Mets cant find some way to make credible use of one of the most beloved Mets of all time. Its the classic failure to connect with the teams history and legacy, and one which was well documented after Citi was built. Mook feels betrayed and lashed out. The owners and FO are largely tone deaf dolts incapable of realizing how to inspire a fan base.
Did anyone see the NYT article yesterday showing the top three favorite teams by zip code for every zip in the lower 48? Interesting, not one single zip code in America had the Mets as their favorite team…not even the zip with Citi Field in it. That is an entirely different kind of amazin’.
Very poor marketing. Improve the marketing and especially the public relations department. It is the Wilpon’s fault that they can’t make money in this market. It is the biggest market and they did draw 4M once, oh so long ago. That article Chris, was an eye opener.
I bet the Mets had a bunch of zipcodes around 1985 to 1992.
I am reading this book now…Mookie has some interesting thins to say. His comments about George Foster are interesting.
The Mets marketing is pretty bad. They had the Captain Wright giveaway shirts, but didn’t do any kind of cross promotion with a brand new Captain America movie. I get that money talks, but that seemed like a good team-up if I ever saw one. Static and boring is how the Mets are seen.
