Andrew BrownThis weekend, the Mets began the very first order of business toward shaping the 2015 roster by clearing space on their 40-man roster.

Outfielder Andrew Brown was claimed on waivers by the Oakland Athletics and catcher Juan Centeno was claimed by the Milwaukee Brewers.  The team also outrighted four players to Triple-A Las Vegas – infielder Josh Satin, lefty relievers Dana Eveland and Scott Rice and righty reliever Buddy Carlyle, as first reported by ESPN’s Adam Rubin.

The Mets now have 34 players on their 40-man roster, with plenty of players to protect for the Rule 5 draft in December.  Friend of the site Chris Walendin compiled a list here in early September of all of the Mets’ eligible prospects.

Any players brought in via major league free agency will have to be placed on the 40-man as well.

All in all, none of the players going off of the 40-man were surprises, between Satin and Rice’s ineffectiveness and Eveland and Carlyle’s expendability there were no real reasons to keep them on the team.  Brown was a nice bench player and Quadruple-A masher-type, but in a crowded Mets outfield, there was no room for him as well, and Centeno is pretty much option number four at catcher behind Travis d’Arnaud, Anthony Recker and Kevin Plawecki.  There won’t be any regret letting any of these guys go.

Now to find a corner outfielder and a shortstop.

No more Scott Rice – happy day!

Now, if we could only get rid of the role, too….

    • NAFEUI

Scott Rice not guilty for Mets do not win world series until year 3000 bad fans.

  • Jerry Grote

Do you think they will go outside the organization for SS (I don’t) or focus on outside help for LF?

And if that, trade or new contract?

    • NAFEUI

You had a good of in Marlon Byrd for less money ,after him Chriss Young and Anderson a lot of money and less production.

If we go outside, I’m expecting it to be like another CY deal. Although this game is bursting at the seams with cash, I believe the financial issues with this team are worse, and maybe much worse than we are led to believe.

Just treading water is gonna cost the team 10M$ increase.

I’m expecting a den Dekker and EY platoon or a cheap scrap heap reclamation. Another Alderson special.

I just saw that Cuddyer was extended a QO. He won’t be in NY.

    • TexasGusCC

Cuddyer probably should take it. He won’t get 15 per year and his injury history is worse than Nelson Cruz’s was so… If you turn it down, good luck.

      • Brian Joura

        I agree with this.

Also, if he does turn it down, the Mets would have to give the Rockies their first-round pick and we know that’s not happening. Time to kick the tires on Jonny Gomes.

        • TexasGusCC

Brian, I think this was a major mistake by the Rockies, but they probably won’t care if he accepts it. No one will offer an oft injured player that is 36 and bad defensively more than 2/20, so why pass up 1/15?

          • Jerry Grote

It won’t be 1/15. It will, in fact, be 2/20 or 2/25.

He’ll just get it to stay in CO

Id do German in a minute and would have Mayberry in NY before the ink on the trade was dry.

        • Raff

Gomes would do well in a platoon. He kills LHP, he runs pretty well, and he’s a terrific bat off the bench. The glove is sporadic- I’m a little scared with all the territory in that park, Someone is going to give him $5-7 mil/yr, possible for 2 years. Not bad considering his production,

    • Jerry Grote

Chris … I think “next up” is Josh Willingham. Paid $7MM last year, produce an 840 OPS v LHP last year, will be out of the way just in time for Mike Conforto.

NTM, a long career in the NL East. Practically a no-brainer, if Sandy can keep his mouth from blabbing something about playing time.

Second choice? Throw Toronto a relief pitcher for John Mayberry. Lifetime 857 OPS against LHP, plays 1B/OF and is an NL East veteran.

      • Chris F

Those sound about right JG. Mayberry a Met….imagine that! (Im not sure I can!!!)…but I like him more than Willingham. Who do you think AA would like for a couple years of Mayberry?

        • Jerry Grote

He gave up Gustavo Pierre to get him – basecally a AA 3B that can’t hit. All you have to do is exceed that and Angelo will feel like he “won” the flip.

I imagine Jayce Boyd or similar makes that deal work. Or that 3B prospect we got that is a tweener. Or a AAA almost reliever that might not have a spot. German, perhaps?

          • Chris F

Id do German in a minute and would have Mayberry in NY before the ink on the trade was dry.

I have a sense Andrew Brown, if given more time, could be the next Brandon Moss-type.

    • TexasGusCC

I think so too. Great power and a great arm, but never played consecutive games. At least he’s in the AL.

  • Metsense

I hope Eveland and Carlyle stay in the Met system. Both had credible years.
I also agree with taking Brown off the forty man roster but the shame is that they had to lose him on waivers. An overlooked weakness on the Mets is that they could use a reserve right handed batting power hitting outfielder that could also play first base. Brown fit the description but did not seize the opportunity when he had a chance.

    • NAFEUI

Brown like others in Mets sistem never received a real opportunity to play in the major league level.

    • Scott Ferguson

Tampa is trying to get Jerry Sands through waivers. He’s basically a younger version of Brown and would be a nice bench piece.

  • NAFEUI

I would like to trade some Mets fans to others teams ,probably making that Mets win 2015 world series.

    • Raff

NAFEUI- can I propose the first Met’s Fan trade? Possibly *you* for a bag of lime to square-out the batter’s box? I think this would be worth a couple wins 😉

      • NAFEUI

The best trade is one broken bat and one old ball sign by the bat boy of any team for you.
