Major League Baseball has suspended New York Mets right-handed pitcher Jenrry Mejia 80 games for failing a drug test. Mejia tested positive for the anabolic steroid Stanzolol.
Stanzolol is commonly used in the bodybuilding community while in “cutting” cycles, where athletes are attempting to lose body fat without sacrificing muscle mass. The State of New York classifies Stanzolol as a Schedule III controlled substance.
Mejia becomes the third MLB pitcher this season to be banned for use of the substance, joining David Rollins of the Seattle Mariners and Ervin Santana of the Minnesota Twins.
Stanzolol is the steroid that right-handed pitcher Roger Clemens and left fielder Barry Bonds are accused to have taken, and is the substance first baseman Rafael Palmeiro infamously failed a test for in 2005.
Mejia will be eligible to return on July 7th when the Mets take on the San Francisco Giants. Mejia, 25, has not pitched this season, battling right elbow inflammation. He posted 28 saves in 2014 after inheriting the closer’s role, spending the early part of the season in the starting rotation. He had a 3.65 ERA, 9.42 K/9, 3.94 BB/9 and a 6-6 record in 93.2 innings pitched.
Dang it man. Just dang it. If its not injuries it this BS. Just play the game the way its meant to be played people!
Well, he will plenty of time to heal.
He could appeal and say it was meant for hair growth.
This is disappointing and raises questions about his performance last year. Was he really a stud closer in the making or is he just another Cesar Puello?
What a train wreck. Immature. Selfish. Stupid. And heading for a major break, perhaps end, of his career. So be it.
Perhaps that’s how he was able to battle back through injuries to have a nice second half of the season. Or maybe not, I don’t know. I hope the Mets ban him another 20 games after he returns to the team, instead of this “welcome back with open arms” crap every club does. Maybe ban him for the season if you don’t need him. I hate this crap. I expect better from my team, and I hate the inevitable excuses that come with this whole story.
Truly a shame. I was one of his biggest supporters, and there are only a few things that could take that away- this was one of them. I thought he showed a ton of promise last season, but maybe it was just the drugs. As with all steroid users, including Marlon Byrd and Bartolo Colon, I don’t believe they should be able to step on a baseball diamond again.
If he is truly telling the truth about not knowing where it came from, I hope he fights the process. If not, I have lost faith in him as a major league starter.
I’ll miss not knowing he took PED’s.
