It took two days to finish, but the Mets and Reds finally finished the game, as the Mets would go on to win 2-1 in 13 innings thanks to a couple of errors by the Reds infield.
- Curtis Granderson hit his 250th home run to start the game as his offensive hot streak continues.
- Juan Lagares robbed Jay Bruce of a home run in the eighth inning to keep the game tied at 1, but popped up a bunt and failed to move Wilmer Flores over in the eighth. In extras, he would get a bunt base hit.
- Matt Harvey pitched a great game, going six innings, allowing one run and struck out Todd Frazier once, and Joey Votto twice.
- Michael Lorenzen gave the Reds a nice start, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing one run. It would have been better if the Mets could have capitalized on his four walks, but Lorenzen made solid pitches when he had to.
- Skip Schumaker made a diving grab to rob Ruben Tejada of a hit, and threw Duda out at second base. The veteran also added a hit and a walk.
- Michael Cuddyer had a chance to end the game in the ninth, as he had runners on second and third and popped out to Brandon Phillips. There was also a chance for Cuddyer to end the game in the eleventh with runners on second and first, but struck out. The 36-year-old veteran may be in need of some games off, as he has gone 2-22 (.091) over his past ten games.
- Dilson Herrera‘s base running was the key factor in this game, as he went from first to third on Granderson’s single to right field. Jay Bruce usually has a cannon for an arm, but seemed surprised that Herrera took third, and his throw was offline.
The bullpens for both teams pitched well, and both offenses struggled mightily with runners in scoring position. Steven Matz will be making his Major League Debut against the Reds in the second game.
Curtis Granderson – the only blip on the life support monitor.
I was at the game on Saturday. The thought that Granderson mis-played that ball was a bit harsh. It was far from routine: a long run to get to and in progressively bad conditions.
