The Mets lost a tough game today, as they had the lead multiple times, but the Orioles were pesky and prevailed with a 5-4 victory.
- Noah Syndergaard‘s struggles on the road continued tonight, as he allowed eight hits, walked two in five innings. Too many base runners in a short period led to a short start, which put more pressure on the bullpen to finish the game.
- Hansel Robles and Carlos Torres allowed solo homers, which will only add to the conversation of the bullpen struggles recently.
- Wilmer Flores and Daniel Murphy hit home runs for the Mets, and both players drove in two runs.
- Gary Cohen brought up a great question tonight: Lucas Duda was on second base with one out and Juan Uribe was at the plate against Darren O’Day. Kelly Johnson was on the bench, but Collins decided to stick with Uribe, who hit a soft grounder to Chris Davis at first base. Travis d’Arnaud would strike out to end the inning. Why did Collins not go with Johnson against the righty? O’Day is tough to hit either way, but it seems Johnson could have had a better opportunity.
Bartolo Colon will start for the Mets against the Colorado Rockies on Friday, as the Mets are off tomorrow.
Well, the O’s are a good team and we aren’t going to win them all. The Nationals won so they shaved a game off the pace and expect them to heat up at some point. Too good a team and the law of averages has to smile on them eventually. It’s going to be a fight that I hope the Mets are ready to take, because that’s what they will need to do. Do they have what it takes?
No team is perfect, but everyone will have to carry their weight. Teams’ deficiencies will ultimately be their demise.
It is going to come down to the NY Mets starting pitching. It has to be great, and they will not make it. The offense is only okay, and the bullpen is falling apart.
O’Flaherty needs to go. Replacing Parnell with a starter does not help the pen. And Gilmartin is under-utilized.
After Verrett throw 6 pitches, it should have dawned on those guys that he was good for another 10-12 before pulling him. The club needed 9 outs at that point. If they get out of the 7th, Familia pitches the 9th for the save.
Oh well. The bar is set very high, Noah did not meet it, and the Mets lost.
It is one thing to accept that the Mets might lose on Sunday because they are saving Harvey. It’s another to accept that the same thought-process also forces them to lose on Wednesday, too.
This was a winnable game. Bullpen is an easy target but Thor only going 5 and the lineup stranding runners put a lot of pressure on them. Been a while since there wasn’t a game that didnt come down to the ‘pen. Need a CG or a blowout.
Not knowing that Cespedes had a shoulder issue, I would have started Johnson in right, Granderson in center, Flores at 2B, Tejada at SS and DHed Murphy. Johnson has historically hit Jimenez well.
Johnson has a .408 OBP & a .762 OPS vs. Ubaldo lifetime
Uribe is .333/.412/.467/.878 after last night
Tell you what: Duda getting thrown out trying to steal turned out to be a huge play. With the two walks that followed, they would have had the bases loaded & 1 out. Flores’s base hit would have scored 2, rather than just 1.
Why would Collins send Duda? Not only is his back an issue, as well as his speed, it was a one run game.
In spite of the pitcher’s inability to hold runners on, this was a most unnecessary and ill advised risk.
Duda could have jammed his feet into the base, harming his back; not to mention that he is not the most fleet-o-foot blazer on the base paths.
After that inning, I thought NY press would give Collins heck if we lose.
I haven’t seen it mentioned outside of this.
It got overshadowed amid all the homerun/bullpen hoopla…
It is tough to personally experience a walk off home run in the home teams ballpark. Johnson ph for Uribe was my choice because of O’Days delivery. Lagares ran across that whole outfield to make that catch. Amazing catch!
