As a Met fan you know who Dilson Herrera is. He’s been to the majors a few time and he’s never quite lived up to the hype of a “Future All-Star” that has been bandied about. To drive this point home, the Mets traded for Neil Walker and signed Asdrubal Cabrera because they wanted Herrera to get more seasoning in the minors. This decision may have been the right one.
Once upon a time the Mets acquired Herrera (along with Vic Black) for Marlon Byrd and John Buck. While this trade hasn’t proven to be a fleecing such as the R.A. Dickey trade, it does look like Sandy Alderson might end up being the winner here too. That is, if Herrera pans out.
Back in April, things did not start well. Herrera managed a pitiful OPS of .643 and looked like he was taking a massive step back in 2016. Then, Herrera took a breather with a minor injury and came back firing on all cylinders.
Thus far, Herrera has a 1.197 OPS in May with 2 doubles, 1 triple and 7 home runs. He’s also striking out less and looking like an offensive star in nearly every game.
The Mets will want to test Herrera in the majors in 2016 to see if he’s going to be ready to replace Walker in 2017.
AAA: Las Vegas 51’s
Brandon Nimmo needs some muscle – He’s hitting and getting on base… but that’s where his contributions end.
Rafael Montero back on track – His last two starts were quite good and almost erase the memory of the disastrous start on May fourth.
Paul Sewald is quietly putting in a great season – He’s not a flashy closer but he’s been darned effective in 2016.
AA: Binghamton Mets
Matt Oberste is outshining the big star – He’s not supposed to be the best first baseman in Binghamton but you could make a case for it.
Dominic Smith needs to heat up again – He’s hitting alright but he’s not hitting as well as we know he can.
A+: Port St. Lucie Mets
Wuilmer Becerra shows off his wheels – He stole 8 bases in 2015 and had not stolen any to date in 2016. This Saturday alone, he stole two.
Amed Rosario is learning the most important thing – He’s got 6 walks and 2 strikeouts in his last 10 games. That’s beautiful!
Tim Peterson is a good reliever – Expect him to get promoted to AA this season.
A: Columbia Fireflies
David Thompson has star quality – He’s the offensive star of the team and it seems the Fireflies only win when he’s hitting well.
Milton Ramos making up ground – 10 games ago he was hitting .190 and now he’s hitting .247 with 8 walks.
P.J. Conlon and Kevin Canelon are still on target – With solid WHIPs, they are both looking like mid-season promotion candidates.
Looks like it Reynolds getting the call.
Off topic. My apologies. I’m in NYC (from TX) for my daughter’s graduation from Pratt and my wife decided to take me to a Mets game as an early. Father’s Day present. We are going Wed night. The probable Mets pitcher is TBA. Anyone have the skinny on who will start?
As of now (8:30 am Tue), I see the same thing. I read somewhere this morning that Matz is likely not to start against the Nats. Given the following:
Sun (v Col) = deGrom
Mon = off
Tue = Synd
Wed = ?
Thu = Harvey
My guess is you get Colon.
The whole Murphy kerfuffle — the pros and cons and the rabid debate — hinges upon the future performance of Dilson Herrera.
If Herrera is the Mets 2B next season, and if he plays up to (my) expectations, the Mets will free 15 million per year for four seasons. This will allow them to sign a pitcher long-term, or address team needs in some other way.
If Dilson fails, well, we’ll miss Murphy and we’ll miss Walker, horribly.
Letting Murphy walk was always going to hurt this season. But the long view was the correct response, I believe . . . so long as Dilson Herrera turns out to be a baller.
Murphy’s non-signing was probably leveraged against whether they felt he was a cornerstone player…a guy who would “occupy” $15 million payroll.
I’d say that Wright’s forward performance will have more to do with measuring Murph’s exit, going forward. Murph would’ve been an excellent replacement.
As for Walker— I’m betting that I will prefer 2016 Walker to 2016 Murph.
The Dilson started off this year with a bad shoulder, one which prevented him from playing the field. Unsurprisingly, he didn’t hit in the beginning of the year, either.
He played his first game in the field on 4/16. Since that point, he has a .333/.357/.649 line in 115 PA. Sure, it’s Vegas/PCL, it’s a small sample and his walks have mostly disappeared. All of those things duly noted.
But he’s crushing the ball and his K% has gone down this year. He’s only fanned 17 times in these 115 PA. And his BABIP in this stretch is at .337 – compare that to Travis Taijeron at .407, Roger Bernadina at .408 and Ty Kelly at .470
I believe in the bat.
With Wrights retirement, you may see a re-sign on Walker…Dilson moves to 2b….Walker slides to 3rd
Dilson Herrera was the reason Murphy was not signed to a multi year contract. Murphy is a good player with a career 112 OPS+ and 14.2 WAR over 8 seasons. Murphy when he refused the QO was replaced by Walker who has a career 113 OPS and 16.9 WAR over 8 seasons. I think Dilson, who is a full package of power, speed, hitting and defense is going to be better than both over the course of his career.
I have followed the parallel paths of Matt Oberste and Dominic Smith. Many times through that period Oberste outshined the star but Smith by the end of the season had the better stats. Oberste should be recognized as a player that can compete with the highly regarded Smith and it is nice that he is getting that recognition.
Becerra contiues to impress.I can’t wait to see Thompson “live”.
