We can all get used to these comeback wins against he Nats. Entering the 8th inning down 1-0, the Mets offense came alive led by some unlikely heroes. Adeiny Hechavarria, Juan Lagares, and Rajai Davis all had big hits as the Mets stormed for six runs to beat the Nationals, improving to 7-5 on the year against them.
An Opening Day rematch pitching duel between Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer became overshadowed by the remarkably bad Nationals bullpen and the unexpected surge of offense from the Mets.
Fresh off a 2-hour uber, journey-man Rajai Davis came to the plate for the final blow in this one, delivering a three-run home run off Nationals closer Sean Doolittle. Added to the team last minute for an injured Brandon Nimmo, Davis arrived in the third inning from Allentown PA. Nimmo was joined by Robinson Cano on the growing list of injured Mets as the second baseman injured his leg ironically running out a groundball. Luis Guillorme may be called up in the next few days with Jeff McNeil battling injuries as well.
Gut Reaction: It was a Juanferful game! It was a clutch hit!
People named Rajai “have a tendency is to finish whatever they started”. Rajai did that by “Rocking the Casbah” and maybe the Met “winds have changed direction”.
DeGrom is so good.
Another good night for the bullpen, Gsellman, Bashlor and Gagnon.
They won the series! Don’t get out the brooms but instead get out the shovels and bury the Nats.
If you bury the Nats, Girardi may be managing them tomorrow.
Hopefully, the quick turnaround game hurts the Nats’ psyche and they lay down today.
It’s quite unfair to say the Nats bullpen melted down and not point out that the Mets simply took the game away from them. Hechavarria’s double almost left the park, and with two outs Frazier uncharacteristically doesn’t chase up out of the zone working out a walk. Gomez got plunked by a tight first pitch fastball because he crowds the plate. The only mistake you can say was a low fastball to Lagares, who should only see sliders off the plate. But the Mets worked for that lead and after an intentional pass to Ramos, Rajai Davis’ three run shot just meant Edwin Diaz didn’t need to pitch.
Mickey Callaway yesterday said that Rajai Davis is “a winning player” and his positive attitude is infectious. I do believe the first part because wherever he goes, his teams do well. Will he be able to offset the perennially sulky Cano is hard to know. Also, when the team becomes healthy, one of CarGo or Raj will need to go.
