The Mets finally won a game against the Phillies and they have their bullpen to thank for it. Philadelphia entered the night with five wins against the Mets since June 9th, while going 4-15 against other teams in that stretch. Noah Syndergaard battled early, going five innings and leaving the game with a 6-4 lead.
Tempers sparked in usual fashion between these teams when Todd Frazier was hit by a pitch and ejected for yapping on his way to first base. The next at bat Amed Rosario was hit, which caused Mickey Callaway to get heated and consequentially, the boot from the game.
The Mets bullpen relatively held the game together as a long winded combination Justin Wilson, Robert Gsellman, Steven Matz, Seth Lugo and Edwin Diaz worked their way through the Phillies lineup. Diaz most notably pitched through the heart of the opponent’s lineup.
My Gut Reaction is that, despite the win, there is such a noticeable difference in roster construction and management of the two rival rosters. The Phillies displayed solid defense up the middle all night and continued to grind out hits. The Mets were thrown out on the basepaths and had two errors on defense (although a substituted Adeiny Hechavarria made two web-gems at third base).
The Mets send Zack Wheeler to the mound tomorrow for the last game before the All-Star break in what could be his last home start for the club.
I’m feeling sorry for Callaway.
I don’t want to be over dramatic but I feel sorry for us fans.
And even for the guys on the field. It’s tough to go to work under the conditions that seem to be happening.
One win on Sunday though and the sky brightens just a bit?
Pete, good points.
The drama is consistent w a “promoter” like BVW—-
Tweeting video & photos of himself in batting practice or better —
A video, not of DeGrom receiving the Cy Young Award, but of Broadie’s reaction to seeing DeGrom be awarded the Cy Young Award.
Mickey is a little dog oft bit, looking for easy targets to bite & regain self respect.
1-2 change up, in a 1 run game and Mickey wants a faltering pitcher thrown out?
Broadie bullies Callaway.
There’s talent on this team. If only BVW and Callaway were fired and Jeff McNeil given back his earned natural position —let him fulfill his career…
And attempt to move some vets—though I’d like to see Wheeler signed.
